ANTHONY Ervin has lost it?

NOT!

The Cal Olympic co-gold medalist showed that when it comes to the 100 free, at least, he's non-pariel as he blasted to a meet record 49.24 win this evening on the final night of competition at the 34th Santa Clara
International Invitational here. The meet was swum in the George Haines International Pool.

Ervin lost the 50 last night to former Cal teammate Bart Kizierowski, who swims with him on the Phoenix Swim Club, leading some to speculate that he had lost his "golden touch" in this race – especially after he also lost the 50 free at NCAAs to Stanford's Anthony
Robinson a few months earlier.

"Hey, even Babe Ruth struck out a few times," Ervin said after his win tonight. "People expect me to go out and set records every time I dive in the pool. They forget there's seven other guys in the race, all of whom would like nothing better than to beat 'the Olympic gold medalist.'"

Second in the 100 was Kizierowski in a fast unshaved 49.98, and the Polish Olympian says he's looking forward to a rematch in Fukuoka in three weeks.

"For sure, for sure," Super K said.

Third was Brazilian Olympian Gustavo Borges (50.14).

In the other men's events, Stanford's Markus Rogan made it two for two in the backstrokes with a 56.48-56.58 win over Cardinal teammate and NCAA runner-up Randall Bal. Third, as he was in the 200, was Arizona State's promising soph, Ahmed Hussein (56.78), an Egyptian citizen. Rogan won the 200 back Friday.

In the 200 IM, Canada's Brian Johns took the measure of Olympic bronze medalist Tom Wilkens (2:03.10-2:04.23) with Rogan third (2:05.58). And in the 1500 free, Michigander Chris Thompson, Sydney bronze medalist, won in 15:20.84 for his second gold of the meet. He also won the 800 free opening night.

On the distaff side, Stanford's Shelley Ripple won a close 200 fly duel with China's 1994 world champion and '96 Olympic silver medalist Liu Limin, 2:10.94-2:11.04, with Canada's Jessica Deglau (2:12.85) third.

In the 200 back Cal's Alice Henriquez was numero uno (2:16.98) while in the 50 free, World Championship team member Tammie Spatz-Stone went a quick 25.30
to win over Terrapins' Natalie Coughlin's pr 25.74. Coughlin had won the 100 free in a pr 55.68 Saturday night. Third was another Texas World Championship Team member, former Longhorn Colleen Lanne (25.92), followed by the 'Horns' Erin Phenix (25.96).

The 200 IM featured a tight race between Canada's veteran Olympic bronze medalist Marianne Limpert and Novaquatics' Gabrielle Rose. Limpert ended up
edging the former Stanford star by a narrow 2:15.47-2:15.55 margin. Third was former Cal Bear and now Texas Longhorn Joscelyn Jeo, who represented
Singapore at Sydney last September.

— Bill Bell

XXXIV Santa Clara International Swim Meet
July 1, 2001
George Haines International Swim Center

                   MEN'S EVENTS (Day 4)

100 Meter Freestyle

  1 Ervin, Anthony L 20 PSC-AZ 52.15 49.24^
23.42 49.24
2 Kizierowski, Bart X 24 PSC-AZ 51.13 49.99@
23.75 49.99
3 Borges, Gustavo BRAZ 50.92 50.14@
24.28 50.14
4 Steele, Jake 22 Pacific Dolphins 51.68 51.43@
24.45 51.43
5 Schrver, Jay R 22 LSC-CO 51.82 51.52@
24.81 51.52
6 Brinn, Sion D 28 UN-OH 51.65 51.58@
24.44 51.58
7 Macedo, Matt E 20 ALMA-PC 52.16 51.70@
24.90 51.70
8 Bera, Richard S 29 Sun Devil-AZ 52.43 52.08
25.15 52.08
9 Smart, Matt E 21 TIGR-PC 52.35 52.66
25.21 52.66

200 Meter IND.
