{"id":263530,"date":"2017-06-29T15:40:53","date_gmt":"2017-06-29T22:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=263530"},"modified":"2021-06-29T08:29:56","modified_gmt":"2021-06-29T15:29:56","slug":"ella-eastin-bethany-galat-dqed-in-400-im-for-violation-of-lochte-rule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ella-eastin-bethany-galat-dqed-in-400-im-for-violation-of-lochte-rule\/","title":{"rendered":"Ella Eastin, Bethany Galat DQ&#8217;ed in 400 IM For Violation of Lochte Rule &#8212; UPDATED"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ella Eastin\u00a0<\/strong>appeared to touch second in the women&#8217;s 400 IM at U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, but she was disqualified for &#8220;swimming more than a quarter of the race in a style of backstroke.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That indicates a violation of the so-called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-officially-makes-ryan-lochte-turn-illegal-in-im-races\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lochte rule<\/a>,&#8221; which was instituted after the 2015 World Championships when\u00a0<strong>Ryan Lochte\u00a0<\/strong>began kicking on his back while swimming freestyle. It was determined that in any IM or medley relay event, a swimmer cannot come off the wall past vertical (i.e., closer to back down) on freestyle\u00a0legs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bethany Galat<\/strong>, who is already on the World Champs team as the second-place finisher in the women&#8217;s 200 breast, was also DQ&#8217;ed in the 400 IM final for a similar rules violation.<\/p>\n<p>After both DQs were announced, the crowd at the IUPUI Natatorium boo&#8217;ed the calls as Stanford women&#8217;s coach\u00a0<strong>Greg Meehan<\/strong> made his way to the officials table to protest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> A total of four swimmers were DQed in 400 IM finals for violations of the same rule.
