LUXEMBOURG, January 29.THE Luxembourg Long Course Euro-Meet featured several meet records falling to the wayside, but none proved to be faster on a world-wide scale than Alain Bernard's effort in the sprint free.<\/p>\n
Bernard downed the men's 50 free meet mark with a time of 22.14. That effort smashed the 22.43 set by Vyacheslav Shyrshov back in 2003, and bettered Bernard's world bellwether time in the event of 22.26 set in Nancy, France last weekend. Boris Steimetz took second in 22.60, while Steffen Deibler wound up third in 22.66.<\/p>\n
Bernard topped the men's 200 free in 1:49.90 for his second win of the night, while Markus Deibler touched second in 1:50.55. Yoris Grandjean wound up third overall in 1:52.42.<\/p>\n
Andriy Govorov lowered the meet record in the men's 50 fly with a time of 23.97. That swim eclipsed his preliminary record of 24.00, which beat Andriy Serdinov's 2003 standard of 24.11. Govorov now stands second in the early world charts with Francois Heersbrandt atop the mountain with a 23.94. Steffen Deibler moved to third in the world with a 23.99, while Philip Heintz earned third in 24.55.<\/p>\n
Laurent Carnol eclipsed the meet record in the men's 200 breast with a winning time of 2:13.23. That swim beat the 2:14.17 he set back in 2009. Panagiotis Samilidis also beat the previous championship standard with a second-place time of 2:13.58. Hugues Duboscq picked up third in 2:14.17.<\/p>\n
Markus Deibler tracked down a meet record of his own with a 2:02.95 in the men's 200 IM. That performance surpassed the 2:03.27 set by Kamil Kasprowicz in 2008. Raphael Stacchiotti finished second in 2:04.87, while Andreas Vazaios took third in 2:06.08.<\/p>\n
Duboscq started off the day with a triumphant 28.45 in the men's 50 breast. Samilidis (28.78) and Mattie Pesce (29.11) took second and third. Ruta Meilutyte followed in the women's 50 breast with a winning time of 31.85. Angeliki Exarchou (32.49) and Laura Simon (32.59) rounded out the top three.<\/p>\n
Emma Wilkins surfaced from a close battle in the women's 50 fly with a 27.56. Darya Stepanyuk finished second in 27.60, while Iris Rosenberger earned third-place honors in 27.62. In another exciting finale, Silke Lippok held off Coralie Balmy, 1:59.01 to 1:59.36, in the women's 200 free. Mylele Lazare grabbed third in 2:01.34. <\/p>\n
Dorian Gandin captured the men's 100 back in 56.89, while Matteo Milli took home second in 57.32. Mark Fischer wound up third in 57.74. Jenny Mensing snagged the women's 100 back title over Christin Zenner, 1:02.34 to 1:02.82. Mie Nielsen picked up third in 1:03.72.<\/p>\n
Julie Pujol beat Angeliki Exarchou to the wall, 2:32.59 to 2:32.64, in the women's 200 breast. Carmella Kitching completed the podium with a third-place 2:33.96. <\/p>\n
Elena Sheridan touched out Lena Kalla, 2:14.40 to 2:14.54, in the women's 200 fly. Paula Beyer claimed third in 2:16.05. Christophe Lebon dominated the men's 200 fly finale with a 2:00.15. Mathieu Fonteyn placed second in 2:04.08, while Jamie Berger earned third in 2:04.15.<\/p>\n
Katharina Schiller won the women's 200 IM in 2:17.77. Nina Schiffer touched second in 2:18.66, while Annika Mehlhorn pocketed third in 2:19.56. Darya Stepanyuk claimed the women's 50 free in 25.80.
