Chase Kalisz will be looking for his third straight World Championship team in the 400 IM tonight as his Georgia teammates <strong>Gunnar Bentz<\/strong> and <strong>Jay Litherland<\/strong> will be vying for their first Worlds team.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kelsi Worrell<\/strong> will be looking for her first World Championship berth in the 100 fly as she leads a number of girls searching for their first team including <strong>Hellen Moffitt<\/strong> and <strong>Sarah Gibson<\/strong>. <strong>Jack Conger<\/strong> and <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> will battle it out in the men&#8217;s race as <strong>Tom Shields<\/strong> and <strong>Tim Phillips<\/strong> are looking for return trips to Worlds. Conger and Dressel are already on the team after swims they had Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lilly King<\/strong>, <strong>Kevin Cordes<\/strong>, <strong>Ali DeLoof<\/strong> and <strong>Matt Grevers<\/strong> are all top seeds in their respective 50 strokes as a couple American Records could fall down in those events tonight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2017-phillips-66-us-national-championships\/usa-senior-national\/2017\/June\/27\">Live Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Today&#8217;s Events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 400 IM<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 400 IM<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 100 Fly<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 100 Fly<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 50 Breast<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 50 Breast<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 50 Back<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 50 Back<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 400 IM<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Leah Smith<\/strong>\u00a0grabbed the top seed spot in an unconventional event on Wednesday morning at the Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships. The new postgrad swimmer Smith swam a 4:36.90 in the 400 IM prelims, an event she is not known to swim at the national level. That time puts her ninth in the world for 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Smith was followed by veteran\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Beisel<\/strong>\u00a0in second at 4:38.78. Beisel is looking to make her sixth World Championship team dating all the way back to 2007. Beisel has indicated this is her last World Trials and has not stated any plans beyond 2017. NCAA champion\u00a0<strong>Ella Eastin<\/strong>\u00a0is seeded third at 4:40.56.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brooke Forde<\/strong>\u00a0(4:42.32),\u00a0<strong>Brooke Zeiger<\/strong>\u00a0(4:43.09),\u00a0<strong>Ally McHugh<\/strong>\u00a0(4:43.75),\u00a0<strong>Bethany Galat<\/strong>\u00a0(4:43.81) and\u00a0<strong>Madisyn Cox<\/strong>\u00a0(4:44.63) will also swim in the A-final. Galat is already on the team for Budapest after her second place finish in the 200 breast last night. Worrell looks to be in good shape to pick up her first individual spot on a World Championship team as she is already on the team for the 4&#215;100 free relay. Worrell was followed in the prelims by North Carolina&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hellen Moffitt<\/strong>\u00a0(58.24) and Texas A&amp;M&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sarah Gibson<\/strong>\u00a0(58.41).<\/p>\n<p>Moffitt is in line to make her first Worlds team after she competed for the USA at the short course worlds in December. Gibson also has a good chance to get on the team after she narrowly missed making it in the 200 fly Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>One of the big surprises of the morning was\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford<\/strong>\u00a0getting into the final here. She placed fourth at 58.61 and could play spoiler to Moffitt and Gibson. Comerford already won the 100 free at this meet. He came back Thursday morning to have another good swim in the 100 fly heats with a 51.37 to swim the fourth fastest of 2017. Conger now sits behind South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chad Le Clos<\/strong>\u00a0(51.29), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Li Zhuhao<\/strong>\u00a0(51.34) and France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mehdy Metella<\/strong>\u00a0(51.36). Conger just out-touched 50 fly champ\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>\u00a0in his heat at 51.38.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tom Shields<\/strong>\u00a0(51.73) and\u00a0<strong>Tim Phillips<\/strong>\u00a0(51.76) both have legitimate chances to make return trips to the World Championships as those four swimmers are head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the seeds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matthew Josa<\/strong>\u00a0(52.33),\u00a0<strong>Justin Lynch<\/strong>\u00a0(52.63) and\u00a0<strong>Andrew Liang<\/strong>\u00a0(53.08) will swim in the A-final tonight. There was a tie for eighth as Michigan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Miles Smachlo<\/strong>\u00a0and Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zach Harting<\/strong>\u00a0tied for eighth at 53.16. Harting won the swim-off with a 52.63 to Smachlo&#8217;s 53.08. The time broke the meet record held by\u00a0<strong>Jessica Hardy<\/strong>\u00a0at 30.12 set in 2014. King also just missed Hardy&#8217;s American Record at 29.80 set in 2009. She now sits second in the world rankings behind Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yulia Efimova<\/strong>\u00a0(29.88).<\/p>\n<p>King is the top seed into tonight&#8217;s A-final ahead of\u00a0<strong>Katie Meili<\/strong>\u00a0(30.47),\u00a0<strong>Molly Hannis<\/strong>\u00a0(30.67),\u00a0<strong>Jorie Caneta<\/strong>\u00a0(30.85),\u00a0<strong>Andrea Cottrell<\/strong>\u00a0(31.13),\u00a0<strong>Breeja Larson<\/strong>\u00a0(31.14),\u00a0<strong>Natalie Pierce<\/strong>\u00a0(31.22) and\u00a0<strong>Katharine Ross<\/strong>\u00a0(31.25).<\/p>\n<p>King can elect to swim the 50 breast in Budapest if she wins tonight because of the World Championship qualification\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/world-championships-selection-procedures.pdf\">rules<\/a>. King could challenge the World Record held by Lithuania&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong>\u00a0(29.43), something she has said she wants to achieve this year. Cordes swam a 26.89 to break\u00a0<strong>Brendan McHugh&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0US Open and meet record at 27.10 from 2014. Cordes now sits second in the world behind Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong>\u00a0(26.48).<\/p>\n<p>Cordes also narrowly missed his own American Record from 2015 at 26.76. Cordes leads\u00a0<strong>Andrew Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0(27.29),\u00a0<strong>Cody Miller<\/strong>\u00a0(27.39),\u00a0<strong>Nic Fink<\/strong>\u00a0(27.41),\u00a0<strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong>\u00a0(27.45),\u00a0<strong>Ian Finnerty<\/strong>\u00a0(27.54),\u00a0<strong>Connor Hoppe<\/strong>\u00a0(27.78) and\u00a0<strong>Matthew Anderson<\/strong>\u00a0(27.79) into the A-final. This was the first appearance of the meet for Olympic bronze medalist Miller.<\/p>\n<p>Cordes could have the option to swim the 50 in Budapest since he is already on the team. She has been swimming very well across the Arena Pro Swim Series meets and has showed she is not messing around at the Phillips 66 USA Swimming Nationals. DeLoof snagged the top seed of the 50 back with a 27.82 to just miss the meet record held by\u00a0<strong>Rachel Bootsma<\/strong>\u00a0at 27.68 from 2013. DeLoof was just ahead of Missouri&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hannah Stevens<\/strong>\u00a0at 27.94.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kathleen Baker<\/strong>\u00a0(28.09),\u00a0<strong>Courtney Caldwell<\/strong>\u00a0(28.39),\u00a0<strong>Grace Ariola<\/strong>\u00a0(28.51),\u00a0<strong>Caroline Baldwin<\/strong>\u00a0(28.51),\u00a0<strong>Amy Bilquist<\/strong>\u00a0(28.64) and\u00a0<strong>Katharine Berkoff<\/strong>\u00a0(28.74) will also swim in the A-final tonight.<\/p>\n<p>The big story of the morning was\u00a0<strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong>\u00a0who slipped on the start. She fell to 32nd at 29.25 but will still have a chance to make the team in the 100 back tomorrow.
