HONOLULU, June 27. UNIVERSITY of Hawaii Athletic Director Hugh Yoshida announced the appointment today of Mike Anderson as the university's new head coach of the men's and women's swimming team.<\/p>\n
"I am proud and honored that the Hawaii familu has invited me to be part of the tradition here at UH," Anderson said. "The University of Hawaii is a respected name, not only in the US, but around the Pacific Rim."<\/p>\n
Since May of 1999, Anderson served as Associate Head Coach of the University of Alabama. Before that he was head coach at the University of Nevada, where his teams amassed a 105-21 record. From 1996-99 he was honored each year as the Big West Conference Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n
Anderson replaces Dr. Sam Freas, who returned to Florida to serve as head of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and Bruce Kinnard, who served as acting coach in the interim.<\/p>\n
Anderson said his first goal is to win conference titles and finish the season ranked among the nation's elite teams.<\/p>\n
