RALEIGH, North Carolina, January 28. THE University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued their impressive seasons, notching wins over North Carolina State University Thursday in dual meet action. The UNC men edged the Wolfpack 177-123, while the women rolled to a197.5 to 99.5 victory. <\/p>\n
Both men and women fared well as Carolina took top honors in 24 of 32 events to help knock off a historically strong N.C. State program. <\/p>\n
"N.C. State has a rich history, and when I was a swimmer at UNC and far into my assistant coaching days, we never beat N.C. State on the men's side," said North Carolina Head Coach Rich DeSelm, "The UNC-N.C. State rivalry will always be there in any athletic contest, and we're always going to work hard to come out on top."<\/p>\n
For the women, sophomore Katie Nolan and junior Laura Moriarty led the way, with Nolan placing 1st in both the 100 back and 100 free and Moriarty topping the podium in the 200 fly and 200 breast. <\/p>\n
Senior Rebecca Kane also swam her way to victory in the 50 free, while the freshmen duo of Stephanie Peacock and Danielle Jansen finished 1st in the 200 IM and 100 breast, respectively. <\/p>\n
Sophomore Stephanie Eisenring rounded out the Tar Heel top finishers, posting an impressive come-from-behind win in the 500 free, taking the top spot by just 0.16 seconds. <\/p>\n
"The women were clearly in the lead and seemed destined to win," DeSelm said. "As for the men's side, even with a lot of UNC 1st-place finishes, the meet wasn't closed out until the very end."<\/p>\n
Led by a backstroke sweep from senior Josh Hafkin in the 100 and 200 back, the Carolina men surged to a 46-point win over the Wolfpack. Junior Wil Singley also swam well, notching 1st-place finishes in both the 1000 free and 200 IM, the latter of which preserved the win for the Tar Heels and kept the meet from hinging on the final relay. <\/p>\n
Senior Vinny Pryor emerged on top in the 200 breast, while junior Evan Reed won the 100 free for Carolina. Freshman Patrick Ceddia also eked out a win over teammate Victor LeClere to take 1st in the 200 fly. <\/p>\n
In the deep end, junior Jenna Moore swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving contests,while sophomores Jake Kinzbach and Ryland Jones finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, in men's 1-meter action. <\/p>\n
According to DeSelm, the bounce-back win tonight, coming on the heels of a closely contested dual meet to Virginia Saturday, helped Carolina right the ship going forward. <\/p>\n
"Having the chance to compete less than one week following the meet at Virginia gave us the chance to go over to Raleigh and practice what we need to do in three or four weeks at the conference championship to try and win an ACC title and qualify for NCAA's," DeSelm said. <\/p>\n
Carolina will be in action again on Friday, February 4th at 5:00 PM when they play host to Duke on Senior Night at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n
