Ledecky leads <strong>Melanie Margalis<\/strong> (1:57.27) and <strong>Leah Smith<\/strong> (1:57.61) into tonight&#8217;s A-final.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky already had the number one time in the world this year with a 1:55.34 from Santa Clara. She is the heavy favorite for tonight as she is looking to defend her 2015 world title in the event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong> (1:58.00), <strong>Mallory Comerford<\/strong> (1:58.39), <strong>Claire Rasmus<\/strong> (1:58.64), <strong>Cierra Runge<\/strong> (1:58.91) and <strong>Katie Drabot<\/strong> (1:59.09) will swim in the A-final with World Championship relay spots up for grabs. Ledecky, Comerford, Smith and Manuel picked up Budapest spots last night and will be feeling less pressure in tonight&#8217;s A-final. He returned Wednesday morning with a strong 1:46.85 to lead the 200 free heats going into tonight. Haas has been a rising star since winning almost all the freestyle events at the 2014 Junior Nationals. He has showed that potential and then some with some strong swims at the NCAA&#8217;s and a very quick relay split last summer in Rio.<\/p>\n<p>Haas leads a strong 200 free field that is bunched up with a number of 1:47&#8217;s. He is joined by Texas teammate Clark Smith (1:47.10) in the A-final. Those two will be looking for their first World Championship team after swimming in Rio last summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> (1:47.45), <strong>Blake Pieroni<\/strong> (1:47.49), <strong>Mitch D&#8217;Arrigo<\/strong> (1:47.52), <strong>Zane Grothe<\/strong> (1:47.58), <strong>Jay Litherland<\/strong> (1:47.76) and<strong> Conor Dwyer<\/strong> (1:48.10) placed in the top eight. Dressel and Pieroni picked up spots last night in the 4&#215;100 free relay and Pieroni is better at the 200, so he could factor into the top four. Dressel is showing off his stretch 200 speed that he showed in high school.<\/p>\n<p>D&#8217;Arrigo has Italian citizenship so it is unlikely he will be competing in the A-final, but we are not totally sure yet. She is better at the 100, but if she wanted to be a major player on the world scene, she was going to have to get her 200 up to speed with the rest of the world. The women&#8217;s 200 breast has been one of the weaker events for the Americans since the retirement of <strong>Rebecca Soni<\/strong> after the 2012 Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>King swam a strong morning swim in the 200 with a 2:24.68 to lead <strong>Bethany Galat<\/strong> (2:25.10) and <strong>Katie Meili<\/strong> (2:26.09) into the A-final. King and Galat had some strong battles in this pool at Indiana high school state not too long ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrea Cottrell<\/strong> (2:26.11), <strong>Miranda Tucker<\/strong> (2:26.49), <strong>Breeja Larson<\/strong> (2:27.21), <strong>Kayla Brumbaum<\/strong> (2:27.69) and <strong>Vanessa Pearl<\/strong> (2:27.70) will also swim in the A-final.<\/p>\n<p>Larson is the only swimmer in the field who has swum in a World Championships before as she will be looking for her third straight team. Wilson swam a 2:08.64 to snag the top seed in front of four 2:09&#8217;s that are all within a tenth of each other. Wilson&#8217;s time is now seventh in the world for 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nic Fink<\/strong> (2:09.25), <strong>Josh Prenot<\/strong> (2:09.27), <strong>Will Licon<\/strong> (2:09.29) and <strong>Kevin Cordes<\/strong> (2:09.35) are all within striking distance of the lead here as all five of those swimmers looked strong and have a lot left. Baker will be looking to qualify for her second straight World Championships after making her debut in 2015. Baker now sits in sixth in the world rankings for the year behind Australia&#8217;s <strong>Emily Seebohm<\/strong> (2:06.66), Canada&#8217;s <strong>Kylie Masse<\/strong> (2:07.23), Russia&#8217;s <strong>Daria Ustinova<\/strong> (2:07.23), Canada&#8217;s <strong>Hilary Caldwell<\/strong> (2:07.29) and Hungary&#8217;s <strong>Katalin Burns<\/strong> (2:08.38).<\/p>\n<p>Baker leads 15-year-old <strong>Regan Smith<\/strong> from Minnesota&#8217;s Riptide Aquatics (2:08.95) who is in line for a potential first major senior international trip. Kentucky&#8217;s <strong>Bridgette Alexander<\/strong> (2:09.44), Texas A&amp;M&#8217;s <strong>Lisa Bratton<\/strong> (2:09.85), Lakeside&#8217;s <strong>Asia Seidt<\/strong> (2:09.95), Georgia&#8217;s <strong>Hali Flickinger<\/strong> (2:10.21), Georgia&#8217;s <strong>Kylie Stewart<\/strong> (2:10.34) and <strong>Alex Sumner<\/strong> (2:10.36) will swim in the A-final.<\/p>\n<p>Flickinger already has a spot on the team for Budapest after she won the 200 fly last night. Lehane is swimming with his club team in the Academy Bullets and he leads Virginia Tech&#8217;s <strong>Robert Owen<\/strong> (1:57.34) and the Cal duo of <strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong> (1:57.35) and <strong>Jacob Pebley<\/strong> (1:57.49).<\/p>\n<p>Murphy and Pebley swam this event in Rio last summer as Murphy took home the gold medal and Pebley finished fifth. Both of those guys train at Cal and looked pretty easy this morning, but so did Lehane. Her time was slightly off <strong>Dara Torres&#8217;<\/strong> American Record from 2009 at 25.50. Worrell is the top seed by a large margin over <strong>Amanda Kendall<\/strong> (26.33) and <strong>Annie Ochitwa<\/strong> (26.49).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kendyl Stewart<\/strong> (26.50), <strong>Hellen Moffitt<\/strong> (26.57), <strong>Maddie Murphy<\/strong> (26.60), <strong>Alyssa Marsh<\/strong> (26.69) and <strong>Aly Tetzloff<\/strong> (26.74) will also swim in the A-final.<\/p>\n<p>There are no guaranteed World Championships spots up for grabs in the 50 stroke events. Jones paced the heats with a 23.26 to break Godsoe&#8217;s record of 23.29. Jones&#8217; time puts him third in the world for 2017 behind Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Ben Proud<\/strong> (22.80) and Ukraine&#8217;s <strong>Andrii Govorov<\/strong> (23.05).<\/p>\n<p>Jones is also not far off of <strong>Bryan Lundquist&#8217;s<\/strong> American Record of 22.91 from 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Jones leads a stacked A-final with <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> (23.33), <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> (23.51), <strong>Tim Phillips<\/strong> (23.62), <strong>Giles Smith<\/strong> (23.71), <strong>Justin Lynch<\/strong> (23.87), <strong>Tom Shields<\/strong> (23.90) and <strong>Ryan Held<\/strong> (23.93).<\/p>\n<p>The winner does not automatically qualify for Budapest in the 50 stroke events. If the winning swimmer qualifies in another event, then they can elect to swim the 50 in Budapest.
