AMHERST, Massachusetts, January 21. THE UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams pulled out the sweep of Boston College on Senior Night Friday, as the Minutemen beat the Eagles 245 – 48 while the Minutewomen won 216 – 78. It was one of the best showings for both teams in dual-meets to this point in the season as both the men and women combined to win 33 of 34 events. The seniors led the charge, as they were able to win nine individual events over the course of the night.<\/p>\n
All six Minutewomen seniors started the night off right by taking the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. The team of Jenn Corriveau, Jessica Starosielec, Sarah Kanellas and Amina Meho took first in the event (1:50.00) while the team of Gillian Bank, Meghan Nowak, Kaitie English and Tavis Potter took second with a time of 1:50.37.<\/p>\n
Starosielec had a dominant night in the individual events winning the 100 breaststroke (1:07.21) and the 200 breaststroke (2:25.87). She also placed third in the 200 IM (2:15.76) behind fellow senior Potter who took first with a time of 2:10.48.<\/p>\n
The Minutewomen freshman also made their voices heard on senior night with Kaitlyn McKenna taking first in both the 200 butterfly and 100 butterfly with times of 2:11.83 and 1:00.71, respectively. She also finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.01. Anna Cavanaugh took first in the 200 freestyle (1:54.79) and 100 freestyle (53.27) while placing second in the 50 freestyle (25.08). <\/p>\n
In diving Molly Elkins was able to take first in both the one-meter and three-meter dives with scores of 242.92 and 229.65, respectively.<\/p>\n
On the men's side the seniors all of the seniors had a great impact on the outcome of the meet. Chris Howard led the way by taking two individual wins for the Minutemen, placing first in the 50 freestyle (21.14) and the 100 freestyle (46.41). He also helped the 200 medley relay team, with fellow seniors Max Butler, Trevor Ziegler and sophomore Peter Sacco, to a first place finish (1:34.43).<\/p>\n
Butler finished the day taking first in the 100 backstroke (51.38) and second in the 200 backstroke (1:54.74). Senior Dan Backler took first in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.78) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.57). He finished behind senior Brian Schmidt who placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.13).<\/p>\n
Chris Inglis had a phenomenal day in the pool taking first in three individual events. He took the top spot in the 1000 freestyle (9:44.40), 200 butterfly (1:57.53) and the 500 freestyle (4:46.70).<\/p>\n
On the diving board, Jason Cook was once again able to sweep the one and three-meter dives with scores of 281.99 and 340.58, respectively. Senior Adam Duffield took third in the one-meter dive (242.47F) and second in the three-meter (296.03). The other senior diver for the Minutemen, John Clark, did not participate in the meet.<\/p>\n
The Minutemen and Minutewomen swimmers will be off to the Upper Valley Invitational next weekend, while the divers will be heading to Dartmouth.<\/p>\n
