{"id":261842,"date":"2017-06-21T20:58:56","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T03:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=261842"},"modified":"2017-06-21T20:58:56","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T03:58:56","slug":"ioc-president-thomas-bach-says-russia-will-be-sanctioned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-president-thomas-bach-says-russia-will-be-sanctioned\/","title":{"rendered":"IOC President Thomas Bach Says Russia Will Be Sanctioned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The IOC decided not to ban Russian athletes from competing in the Rio Olympics, but IOC President <strong>Thomas Bach<\/strong> told the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em> that sanctions will still be coming for Russia,\u00a0even though the country has taken preemptive action towards increased drug testing and anti-doping education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"275\" data-total-count=\"839\">&#8220;We have the impression that some in Russia were thinking by addressing the issues for the future, the past would be forgotten,&#8221; Bach told the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>.\u00a0You cannot forget what happened in Sochi,&#8221; Bach said, according to the <em>New York Times<\/em>. &#8220;We have made clear that the past \u2014 what happened there \u2014 has to be sanctioned.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"275\" data-total-count=\"839\">Bach is referring to the 2014 Winter Olympics, where anti-doping labs helped cover up massive circumvention of doping rules by Russian athletes. Evidence of this and of other Russian attempts to evade anti-doping procedures was revealed last year in the two-part McLaren Report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"275\" data-total-count=\"839\">The IOC has enlisted two commissions to investigate the allegations made by Canadian researcher\u00a0<strong>Richard McLaren<\/strong>, and Bach would not comment on the severity of Russian sanctions until that investigation is concluded.
