The dreaded mile. Across the 15 laps, swimmers are left alone with their thoughts.<\/p>\n

  1. Alright, good start, how do I keep this momentum going?<\/li>\n
  2. First lap down, how hard can the next 14 be?<\/li>\n
  3. Is everyone else sprinting?<\/li>\n
  4. Do they realize we have 1200 more meters to go?<\/li>\n
  5. Should I have eaten something before this?<\/li>\n
  6. Why didn\u2019t I eat that protein bar\u00a0in my bag?<\/li>\n
  7. If I die of hunger will they still make me finish this race?<\/li>\n
  8. What\u2019s 11 times 50? How long have I been in this pool?<\/li>\n
  9. Am I halfway done?<\/li>\n
  10. Am I in first? Am I in last? Where is everyone?<\/li>\n
  11. Is my counter paying attention while I\u2019m away?<\/li>\n
  12. Should I listen to a song in my head?<\/li>\n
  13. Where did you come from, where did you go? Where did you come from, Cotton-Eyed Joe?<\/li>\n
  14. Why did I just do that to myself?<\/li>\n
  15. Is that person telling me or someone else to kick?<\/li>\n
  16. Should I kick?<\/li>\n
  17. Can I kick?<\/li>\n
  18. Will everything hurt this much when I get out of the pool?<\/li>\n
  19. What is everyone else on my team doing right now?<\/li>\n
  20. Am I supposed to pick up my pace at 200 meters?<\/li>\n
  21. Do I look like I\u2019m going as slow as I feel like I am?<\/li>\n
  22. Where is everyone else?<\/li>\n
  23. If these next two flip turns are perfect, will coach forget about the 30 bad ones?<\/li>\n
  24. Will this last 50-meter sprint kill me?<\/li>\n
  25. How hard do I actually have to touch this wall?<\/li>\n
  26. Can I take a nap now?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
