Orlando Duque<\/strong> is every bit the archetypal legend of his sport, for two decades having been at the very top of high diving.<\/em><\/p>\n

Now 42, he is preparing for yet another season in the Red Bull Cliff Diving Series, and ahead of the season start on June 24<\/span><\/span>in Inis M\u00f3r, Ireland, he gives advice to his younger self\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Duque’s letter to his younger self in full:<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll enjoy life more than you can possibly imagine, and diving will be a part of it almost from the very start.<\/p>\n

Aged 10, you\u2019ll be doing lots of other sports, football mainly because that\u2019s always king in Colombia but then you\u2019ll watch the diving at the local swimming pool and be curious.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll try it and, from the moment you first plunge into the water yourself, you\u2019ll love it. But listen, concentrate and learn everything you can.<\/p>\n

I know that all your thoughts when you have those first lessons will be on the final 15 minutes when you\u2019re allowed to do what you like, let loose and enjoy yourself in the water.<\/p>\n

But listen, pay attention to what you\u2019re hearing. Your thinking will be you\u2019re only doing the class for that glorious 15 minutes at the end but the stuff before\u2026 it\u2019s important.<\/p>\n

Also, those 15 minutes are important because they\u2019ll teach you to be free, they\u2019ll give you that cliff-diving mind set, that little bit of crazy required competing at the very top later in your life.<\/p>\n

And the thing is from those first dives within a year you\u2019ll be winning gold, silver and bronze medals in competitions and your coach will keep on telling you that if you pay attention you could be a lot better. He\u2019s right, and then you\u2019ll start winning everything.<\/p>\n

People will tell you that diving isn\u2019t a career. Of course it isn\u2019t. People just don\u2019t do that. You\u2019ll have aspirations for a proper job, tell people and think it too that diving\u2019s just something you do for fun.<\/p>\n

So instead you\u2019ll study, work hard and go to university. That\u2019s important too.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a public university and in Colombia that means you study a bit, there\u2019s a strike so it stops, it starts again, you study some more, there\u2019s another strike and so on.<\/p>\n

And you won\u2019t have the money then for private university so there will be frustration that\u2019s too much to bear. Then, the opportunity will come to go to Europe to join a diving show at an amusement park on a three-year contract.<\/p>\n

Your family will be worried, friends will think you\u2019re off to join the circus but you\u2019ll reassure them you\u2019ll earn enough money to pay to go to a private university on your return and study properly.<\/p>\n

But the truth is you\u2019ll never go back to study, and diving will take you on a journey you never thought possible.<\/p>\n

And the whole time, diving will always feel good: from the age of 10 to 42 and hopefully beyond, you\u2019ll love the freedom of running and jumping in the water.<\/p>\n

But also, you\u2019ll do well in competitions and suddenly sponsors will follow you. And you\u2019ll have to train hard, harder then you ever have done before. You\u2019ll do four or five hours of training a day and that\u2019s needed to be winning.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re at the top for a competition, the fear will always be there, no matter what, and it always makes you think twice.<\/p>\n

But the fear is a good thing, it\u2019s your mind\u2019s way of protecting your body, just to think twice before diving but, know this, you\u2019ll always be able to do it.<\/p>\n

Sure, you\u2019ll get hurt. You\u2019ll go skydiving in 2011 and end up with a broken foot and from this time where you felt invincible suddenly everything comes crashing down around you.<\/p>\n

The doctor will tell you, \u201cof course you can walk again\u201d and that there will be a full recovery but then you ask about the diving and he\u2019ll be like, \u201cI\u2019m not so sure about the diving\u201d. And that will be the biggest low.<\/p>\n

At the moment, you will be diving the best in your entire career and then, bam, comes the realisation you may never dive again.<\/p>\n

Be patient, though, as everything will be ok. It will take one-and-a-half years to get back to the top and win the World Championships in 2013. And everything that you\u2019ve worked for and lived for will come back, and all will be ok.<\/p>\n

And even when you get to 42, you\u2019ll still be competing and be in the top 10 in the world and even then you won\u2019t retire.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll want to go on for at least two more years after that point but you\u2019ll never retire from diving in one sense. Forever, you\u2019ll have that urge to jump in the water\u2026 that will never leave you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
