COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, January 15. THE Maryland women's swimming and diving team went 2-1 and the men's side took two tough losses in its weekend action against Pittsburgh, Penn State and Villanova.<\/p>\n
On the women's side, Maryland defeated Pittsburgh (212-141) and Villanova (245-106) and fell to Penn State (205-146).<\/p>\n
The Terps began the day with a second place finish in the 400 medley relay, courtesy of the team of Annie Fittin, Alexa Hamilton, Megan Lafferty and Ginny Glover (3:47.75). Maryland also took second in the 400 free relay (3:23.73) via the team of Fittin, Lafferty, Jenni Roberts and Glover.<\/p>\n
Fittin also provided Maryland with its best individual performance, winning the 50 free (23.32). Lafferty took third in the event (23.46). The Terps finished third and fourth in the 200 IM with Jenni Roberts and Martha VanLieshout going 2:06.23 and 2:07.43, respectively.<\/p>\n
Glover was second the 200 back (1:58.72) and Addison Koelle took third in the 200 fly (2:04.58). Hamilton touched the wall fourth in 200 breast action (2:20.83).<\/p>\n
The men fell to Penn State (219-129) and Pittsburgh (204-149). Andrew Relihan led the men, capturing both the 200 IM (1:52.77) and 200 back (1:49.39). John Hauser was third in the 200 free (1:42.60) and Colin Stang and Andrew Fisher followed up Relihan with fourth and fifth place finishes in the 200 IM (1:57.47) and 200 back (1:52.09), respectively. Stang was also fifth in the 200 breast, directly behind senior Roger Dent (2:11.54), who took fourth. <\/p>\n
Dent added a fourth place showing in the 200 fly (1:53.08) with Sean Stewart coming in fifth (1:53.88). Matt Gruszecki continued to fare well in the sprints, taking fifth in the 50 free (21.58). Hauser was also fourth in the 500 free (4:40.02).<\/p>\n
"Coming into a two session meet and heading into yesterday, we were looking to be that team and that force that swims the whole meet as if we were winning the meet," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "I was really proud of both teams and I was especially proud of the men's team last night and how they came together and put together a good showing and rebounded well today.<\/p>\n
"For the women, we came in here with the desire to win all the meets but also knew the depth that Penn State has, so I looked for our best women to beat their top women. They did a good job…I would have liked to have had a little more depth. Being four and a half weeks out, I feel good about the times they put up, especially being tired."<\/p>\n
Maryland heads to West Virginia next week for a dual meet against the Mountaineers Saturday.<\/p>\n
