{"id":261292,"date":"2017-06-18T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2017-06-18T16:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=261292"},"modified":"2017-06-18T08:49:13","modified_gmt":"2017-06-18T15:49:13","slug":"uclas-brooks-steps-down-after-8-seasons-stanford-is-likely-culprit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/uclas-brooks-steps-down-after-8-seasons-stanford-is-likely-culprit\/","title":{"rendered":"UCLA\u2019s Brooks Steps Down after 8 Seasons; Stanford is Likely Culprit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>BY Michael Randazzo, Swimming World Contributor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last month when <strong>Maggie Steffens<\/strong> ended her Stanford career by burying the game winning goal to lead the Cardinal to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/steffens-goal-all-around-effort-leads-stanford-past-ucla-in-2017-ncaa-title-match\/\" target=\"_blank\">8-7 win<\/a> over UCLA in the 2017 NCAA Women\u2019s Water Polo Championship match, she likely also ended <strong>Brandon Brooks\u2019<\/strong> career coaching the Bruins. In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uclabruins.com\/news\/2017\/6\/16\/womens-water-polo-ucla-coach-brandon-brooks-steps-down.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">announcement<\/a> Friday on the UCLA website, after eight seasons behind the UCLA bench, Brooks is leaving to \u201cpursue other opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In what might be considered an obligatory pat on the back for a good\u2014though ultimately not good enough\u2014effort, UCLA Director of Athletics <strong>Dan Guerrero<\/strong> was quoted as saying: &#8220;Brandon&#8217;s teams contended for national championships every season, and he upheld the UCLA water polo program&#8217;s long tradition of success. We wish him and his family all the best in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>By all measures the former Olympian, All-American and goalie who backstopped the Bruins to back-to-back NCAA men\u2019s titles in 1999 and 2000, was an outstanding coach.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks\u2019 teams compiled an impressive 202-41 record and won four Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) titles (2012, 2014, 2015 and 2017). He led the Bruins to three NCAA title games and was named the 2012, 2015 and 2017 MPSF Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 season was arguably Brooks\u2019 best. UCLA went 24-2, won the MPSF <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalwaterpolo.com\/2017\/05\/02\/ucla-shuts-down-stanford-in-mpsf-wwp-final\/\" target=\"_blank\">title<\/a> and was the country\u2019s #1 team until losing to Stanford in the NCAA final.<\/p>\n<p>His teams did not, however, win a national championship, and at UCLA\u2014now tied with Stanford at 113 for the most NCAA DI titles in American intercollegiate athletics\u2014that simply wasn\u2019t enough, especially given the record of his <span class=\"st\">predecessor<\/span>, <strong>Adam Krikorian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Now the head coach of the U.S. Women&#8217;s Senior National Team that currently dominates women\u2019s international polo, capturing consecutive Olympic golds (2012, 2016), during his time in Westwood Krikorian won seven NCAA titles, including five in a row from 2005-2009.<\/p>\n<p>The coaching change was a reminder of a contentious press conference a month ago\u2014immediately following the Bruins third title loss to the Cardinal in four years.<\/p>\n<p>Brooks opened the session with a heartfelt statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty fresh,\u201d he said of the match, which featured a UCLA comeback to tie at 7 before Steffens\u2019s game winner with nine seconds remaining. \u201cWe showed an incredible amount of heart and fight to pull ourselves back into the game with resilience to keep coming&#8230; If I can have a bit of perspective, that\u2019s what a national championship game should look like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s completely hit me how devastating it is to lose the game. I told my girls: \u2018This is one game. This one game doesn\u2019t determine the greatness of this team.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, with his voice trailing off, Brooks added: \u201cThe way that they worked and came together all year and the fantastic season we had, obviously, we wish we would be playing in overtime or would have won it, but I thought it was a helluva game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcus Veal<\/strong>, a reporter for <em>The Daily Bruin<\/em>, UCLA\u2019s school newspaper, followed up with a tough question about why UCLA couldn\u2019t beat Stanford when it counted most.<\/p>\n<p>Following a pause, Brooks responded, his flat tone indicating he didn\u2019t appreciate the line of inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s a fair question. Each year is completely different. Every single year a person is in college it\u2019s like they\u2019re a different person,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I understand that we have lost three times to Stanford in the final, they\u2019re all single games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But those single losses add up\u2014especially when the standard for success is set by <strong>John Wooden<\/strong>, UCLA\u2019s legendary men\u2019s basketball coach, whose teams captured an unbelievable ten national championships in 12 years (1964-1975).<\/p>\n<p>Presumably whatever new opportunities Brooks finds, they won\u2019t include Stanford. Over the past eight seasons the Cardinal have owned the Bruins: Brooks\u2019 team were 8-15 against J<strong>ohn Tanner\u2019s<\/strong>, losing title matches in 2014, 2015 and 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps UCLA\u2019s most painful loss was not this year\u2019s but in 2015, when Stanford\u2019s <strong>Kiley Neushul<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uclabruins.com\/news\/2015\/5\/11\/210082151.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">scored<\/a> on a five-meter penalty shot with 11 seconds to play in regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Following a save by Bruin goal <strong>Sami Hill<\/strong>, Brooks called timeout;
