LAKELAND, Florida, January 8. WINNING seven of 11 events overall, and getting two more individual wins from Mary O'Sullivan, Florida Southern led from start to finish in its dual meet with Indian River State College, defeating the 32-time NJCAA national champions, 115-81.<\/p>\n
The Moccasins began their day by winning the 400-yard medley relay by less than one second over the team from Indian River. O'Sullivan swam the first leg to put Florida Southern in control before Missy Witt, Taylor Reynolds and Cara Potter closed it out with a winning time of 4:00.51.<\/p>\n
Katilyn Smith and Carlee McDonald then gave the Mocs an even bigger lead in event number two, taking the first two spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and the gap widened when O'Sullivan won the 200-yard freestyle, with Lisa Menne coming in second. At that point, the Moccasins were ahead 41-13 in the meet.<\/p>\n
Indian River, which has won the last 28 national titles at the junior college level, got its first win in the 50-yard freestyle, but Florida Southern took three of the next four events after that, with wins coming from Rae-Lynn Sheffield (200-yard IM), Cara Potter (100-yard freestyle) and O'Sullivan again (100-yard backstroke).<\/p>\n
The meet ended with Smith, Abigail Eley, and Linnea Almqvist and McDonald taking all 11 points in the 400-yard freestyle relay. It marks Florida Southern's fourth straight dual meet victory, with Saturday's result their widest margin in any of them. They're now 4-2 overall and also have a 2nd-place finish at the Nova Southeastern Invitational held over Christmas break.<\/p>\n
Florida Southern will be at home again next Saturday, January 15, when it hosts Saint Leo at 11:00 a.m.<\/p>\n
