LA JOLLA, California, January 8. THE UC San Diego women's swimming team fell in its first action in nearly two months against Loyola Marymount, 132-130, Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Pool. Alex Henley won three events, while Emily Adamcyzk, Olivia Martens and Ann Shakya each recorded first-place finishes on the day.
\nHenley's time of 2:05.74 in the 200 backstroke bested her time from the Tritons last contest at the Arena Invitational on Nov. 13, a day in which she finished in 2:06.55.<\/p>\n
"Alex Henley really showed her versatility-once again," UCSD swimming and diving head coach Scott McGihon said. "Sometimes there's a tendency to take her excellence for granted but that was a very good performance today."<\/p>\n
The 200 medley relay team of Sandy Hon, Jessica Ferguson, Michelle McCadden and Amber Tan took first place in the opening race of the meet and Henley followed with a win in the 1000 free (10:32.09).<\/p>\n
The Lions would win four of the next five races. Martens would record the Tritons lone win within that period in the 200 butterfly (2:10.12). However, UCSD would follow by winning the next three races.<\/p>\n
Henley started the Tritons' hot streak by taking the 200 back, with Lindsay Oosterhouse picking up a lone point as well. Adamcyzk would follow by winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.44, followed by Neda Nguyen who touched the wall in 2:25.07. Shakya followed suit by winning the 500 free in 5:11.79.<\/p>\n
"Olivia Martens' 200 fly was a nice swim and Emily Adamcyzk had a first, second and a third competing in her first meet for UCSD," said McGihon. "There were definitely some bright spots."<\/p>\n
UCSD would take a 126-119 lead after the 200 IM, the final individual race of the day, thanks to a first-place finish by Henley (2:08.94), a third-place finish by Adamcyzk (2:10.82) and a fourth-place finish by Michelle McCadden (2:14.12).<\/p>\n
In the 400 freestyle relay, the final event of the day, LMU would finish first and UCSD would take second place, tying the teams at 130-130. The Lions would battle to win third place in the race, beating the Tritons by a mere 2.38 seconds, taking the final two points of the meet and granting LMU a 132-130 victory.<\/p>\n
"This was a disappointing meet to lose but it was good to race again after eight weeks of training," said McGihon. "We will see how we come out tomorrow."<\/p>\n
UCSD will not have to wait long to rebound, as both the men's and women's swimming and diving programs will take on Grand Canyon and Mesa State on Sunday 11:00 a.m. in Canyonview Pool.<\/p>\n
