{"id":260413,"date":"2017-06-19T11:30:06","date_gmt":"2017-06-19T18:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=260413"},"modified":"2017-07-06T17:07:35","modified_gmt":"2017-07-07T00:07:35","slug":"fina-presidential-candidate-paolo-barelli-continues-to-stir-the-pot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-presidential-candidate-paolo-barelli-continues-to-stir-the-pot\/","title":{"rendered":"FINA Presidential Candidate Paolo Barelli Continues to Stir the Pot &#8211; Updated With Clarification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Paolo Barelli<\/strong>, the lone challenger to longtime FINA President\u00a0<strong>Julio Maglione<\/strong> for this summer&#8217;s elections, has continued to call out officials within FINA for abuses of\u00a0power, according to a report from\u00a0<em>InsideTheGames<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Barelli distributed a letter to the members of the European Swimming Federation (LEN), of which he is president, criticizing African and Asian federations for\u00a0attempting to gain control &#8220;not only of political power&#8230;but even more importantly, over the economic one also.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Note: Since this article was published, Barelli has contacted <em>InsideTheGames<\/em> to refute the above statement and has informed Swimming World of the false attribution in the following statement:<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8220;I am aware\u00a0you (Swimming World) have\u00a0taken it\u00a0from InsideTheGames (as you fairly\u00a0reported) but I take the opportunity to strongly highlight\u00a0that I never criticised any African Country or\u00a0the entire continental organisation\u00a0neither.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000;\">It is an incorrect declaration\u00a0and it does not correspond to the reality.&#8221; &#8211; Barelli dated July 6, 2017<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Barelli has run for FINA President on a platform that Europe has been neglected. He has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/paolo-barelli-announces-candidacy-for-fina-presidency-at-2017-len-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\">earned widespread support on that continent but minimal support elsewhere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<em>InsideTheGames<\/em>, FINA has recently increased the number of African and Asian representatives on its Bureau while eliminating the position of Honorary Secretary traditionally held by a European &#8212; and currently held by Barelli.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sam Ramsamy<\/strong>, the South African who is President of the African Swimming Federation (CANA), has been recommended to fill the position of Second Vice President of FINA, which would replace Barelli&#8217;s position. Ramsamy shot back at Barelli&#8217;s comments about Asian and African abuses of power.<\/p>\n<p>After Ramsamy and other African representatives asked Barelli to withdraw his comments, Barelli criticized Ramsamy for his work in growing swimming in Africa.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;FINA needs to define clear criteria and give economic support to the developing Federations all around the globe,&#8221; Barelli wrote.\u00a0&#8220;There are many Federations in Africa, just as there are others in the other Continental Organisations that could benefit immensely from significant economic support.\u00a0This should have always been a top priority commitment for both you and FINA. Unfortunately, you have completely missed this opportunity.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ramsamy will represent FINA this week at a Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing this week.
