{"id":260057,"date":"2017-06-09T12:39:50","date_gmt":"2017-06-09T19:39:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=260057"},"modified":"2017-06-09T12:42:47","modified_gmt":"2017-06-09T19:42:47","slug":"u-s-world-champs-qualifying-procedures-for-womens-1500-and-mens-800-unchanged","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-world-champs-qualifying-procedures-for-womens-1500-and-mens-800-unchanged\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. World Champs Qualifying Procedures for Women&#8217;s 1500 and Men&#8217;s 800 Unchanged"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-adds-distance-events-mixed-medley-relay-for-tokyo-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\">men&#8217;s 800 free and women&#8217;s 1500 free are now Olympic events<\/a>, but the U.S. qualification standards for the events at this summer&#8217;s FINA World Championships will not change.<\/p>\n<p>USA Swimming confirmed to\u00a0<em>Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>that the qualification procedures, available <a href=\"https:\/\/swimmingworld.azureedge.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/world-championships-selection-procedures.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00a0and posted below, will be unchanged.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Priority No. 1: The top finisher in every Olympic event plus the top four finishers in the 100 and 200 free<\/li>\n<li>Priority No. 2: The second-place finisher in every Olympic event<\/li>\n<li>Priority No. 3: The top finisher in every non-Olympic event (50s of stroke plus women\u2019s 1500 and men\u2019s 800 free)<\/li>\n<li>Priority No. 4: The fifth-place finisher in the 100 and 200 free<\/li>\n<li>Priority No. 5: The sixth-place finisher in the 100 and 200 free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So for this summer, the women&#8217;s 1500 and men&#8217;s 800 will continue to fall under Priority No. 3 as non-Olympic events.<\/p>\n<p>That means that should\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>not swim the 1500 free at Nationals (June 27-July 1 in Indianapolis), she may still have the option of competing in the event at the World Championships in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>However, come this fall, when USA Swimming&#8217;s new National team and funding schedules are announced, the newly-added distance races\u00a0<em>will<\/em> be considered Olympic events. For the first time, athletes will be able to qualify for funding for their performances in those events.<\/p>\n<p>USA Swimming announced earlier that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-swimming-supports-additional-swimming-events-at-tokyo-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\">it supports the IOC&#8217;s decision to add the new events to the Olympic program<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The men&#8217;s 800 free and women&#8217;s 1500 free are now Olympic events, but the U.S. qualification standards for the events at this summer&#8217;s FINA World Championships will not change.
