{"id":259952,"date":"2017-06-09T04:44:03","date_gmt":"2017-06-09T11:44:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=259952"},"modified":"2017-06-09T04:44:03","modified_gmt":"2017-06-09T11:44:03","slug":"tony-azevedos-farewell-game-set-for-sunday-at-stanford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tony-azevedos-farewell-game-set-for-sunday-at-stanford\/","title":{"rendered":"Azevedo&#8217;s Farewell: Meaningful, Memorable Exhibition Set for Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday, June 11 at 3:30 pm will mark a historic, bittersweet moment for USA Water Polo &#8211; Azevedo&#8217;s Farewell.<\/p>\n<p>At this time, Stanford&#8217;s Avery Aquatic Center will host an exhibition game between the United States and Croatia, which will feature five-time Olympian <strong>Tony Azevedo<\/strong> and his final match of water polo.<\/p>\n<p>The match was created specifically for Azevedo to honor his time as a Cardinal and as a member of the U.S. National Team. Before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/five-time-olympian-tony-azevedo-announces-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\">announcing his retirement<\/a>\u00a0in May, he earned four-straight Cutino Awards and led Stanford to two NCAA titles.<\/p>\n<p>Arguably the greatest men\u2019s water polo player in USA Water Polo history, Azevedo is the all-time leading scorer in FINA World Championship history. He has earned\u00a0five Pan-American Games gold medals, two FINA World League Super Final silver medals and was named the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tony-azevedo-named-pac-12-water-polo-player-of-the-century\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pac-12 Conference Men\u2019s Water Polo Player of the Century<\/a>\u00a0in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>After his time at Stanford, Azevedo also embarked on a professional water polo career that saw him play with some of the top clubs in the world including: CAN Bissolati (Italy), J.K. Primorac (Montenegro), VK Jug Dubrovnik (Croatia), Fluminense (Brazil) and most recently Sesi (Brazil). Domestically he\u2019s been an anchor for the New York Athletic Club, helping the team to multiple National Championships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s crazy to think that after playing water polo for 27 years I am finally finished. I have often been asked how long I could go and my answer was the same: \u2018When the time comes I will know.\u2019 I still love this sport and will never leave the water polo community. But I\u2019m ready to shift my focus from playing to working outside the pool to grow and innovate the sport in general. USA and Croatia will meet again to open competition at the FINA World Championship this <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_2125562562\"><span class=\"aQJ\">July 17<\/span><\/span> in Budapest, Hungary.<\/p>\n<p>According to Stanford Coach <strong>John Vargas<\/strong>, a game like this rare. The exhibition was specifically designed and created to honor Tony Azevedo.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve never done this before,\u201d said Vargas. \u201cBut if you\u2019re going to do it, this is the guy you do it for. We want to sell this place out. When Tony was here, we would get full crowds because he was so exciting to watch play. It\u2019s really fitting that it\u2019s here, and just one more sellout for Tony.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fans, players and many people who have have been affected\u00a0by Azevedo throughout his 27-year water polo career will come together to honor him on Sunday. Azevedo said he\u00a0is incredibly grateful for this experience and all the meaning and effort put into the event:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;I couldn\u2019t be more excited to play my last game at Stanford, because during my four years at the University I was molded into the person\/player I am today. I met my wife at Stanford, won four Cutino awards as a student, and made best friends for life on campus.
