Fourteen men and 12 women are repeat performers on this year\u2019s at-large teams. The CoSIDA Academic All-America\u00ae program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2016-17 Division II Academic All-America\u00ae teams program.<\/p>\n
The at-large program for the CoSIDA Academic All-America\u00ae program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women; bowling, crew and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men.<\/p>\n
The 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America\u00ae Men\u2019s At-Large first team features 10 returnees from the 2016 squad, including two-time Academic All-America\u00ae selections Lucas Cuadros<\/strong> from Wingate University and Drew Wolter<\/strong> from Gannon University. Cuadros and Wolter\u00a0both represent their schools in swimming.<\/p>\n Cuadros has a 3.93 G.P.A. with his marketing major. He completes the trifecta, as he made the third team in 2016 and the second team in 2015. This year, Cuadros served as a Bulldog team captain and made his third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division II national championship meet, where Wingate claimed sixth place. He was an All-American in the 400 Freestyle Relay as a sophomore in 2015.<\/p>\n A political science major, Wolter posted a 3.98 G.P.A. at Gannon while moving up one team each year (he was second team in 2016 and third team in 2015). During his GU career, Wolter was an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honoree 23 times. This year, he was twice named All-PSAC. He broke school records at the PSAC championship meet in the 400 freestyle relay as a junior and the 800 freestyle relay as a sophomore.<\/p>\n Two of the seniors to conclude their careers as two-time Academic All-America\u00ae Division II Men\u2019s At-Large first team members are University of California, San Diego swimmer Michael Cohn <\/strong>and\u00a0Florida Southern College swimmer Diego Gimenez.<\/strong><\/p>\n Cohn has a 3.97 G.P.A. as a music major with piano performance honors. At the 2017 NCAA Division II national championship meet, Cohn won the NCAA Elite 90 Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest G.P.A. at the finals site for each NCAA championship. This year, he won one All-American trophy with three honorable mention swims at the NCAA Championships. Cohn won four gold medals (three individual and one relay) as number three UC San Diego won its ninth straight Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving crown.<\/p>\n Gimenez has navigated his FSC career with a 3.93 G.P.A. while majoring in computer science and economics and finance. At this year\u2019s NCAA Division II national championship meet, he collected five All-American awards. Two of his 2017 All-American trophies came as the Moccasin relay quartets won bronze medals. Florida Southern finished fourth at this year\u2019s NCAA meet to clinch its sixth straight top-five finish on the team leader board. Gimenez was FSC\u2019s number one 50 freestyle swimmer on the way to earning second team All-Sunshine State Conference laurels.<\/p>\n Le Moyne College senior swimmer Timothy Buff<\/strong> makes the big jump from the 2016 third team.<\/p>\n Buff won the Northeast-10 Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for men\u2019s swimming and diving for the third straight year in April. He is only the third student-athlete in the eight years of the award (23 seasons, 24 sports) to receive the honor three consecutive years. Buff is a finance and marketing major with a 3.96 G.P.A. In the pool, he earned three top-two finishes at the 2017 Northeast-10 Conference Championships to earn 54 individual points (the second-highest total on the Dolphins team). Buff was the league\u2019s gold medalist in the 400 Individual Medley.<\/p>\n Two of the veteran CoSIDA Academic All-America\u00ae picks earned spots on the 2017 Men\u2019s At-Large second team: Colorado School of Mines junior swimmer Brennan Mays<\/strong> is a second team selection for the second consecutive year, while\u00a0Fresno Pacific University senior water polo player David Maes<\/strong> advance from the 2016 third team to the 2017 second team.<\/p>\n Mays was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic Athlete of the Year. He owns a 3.93 G.P.A. with his petroleum engineering major. In 2017, Mays qualified for the NCAA Division II championships in the three distance freestyle events. He was second team All-RMAC in the 1000 freestyle.<\/p>\n Maes was named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Division II All-American team to conclude a stellar career. He led the Sunbirds with 111 points on 77 goals and 34 assists this season. The distinction is the second All-American honor for Maes. In the classroom, he has a 3.87 G.P.A as a mathematics major.<\/p>\n Dion Dressens<\/strong> (swimming) of Queens University of Charlotte and\u00a0Joseph Moorman<\/strong> (water polo) of California Baptist earned second team honors.<\/p>\n Leif-Henning Kl\u00fcver<\/strong> (swimming) of Wingate, Stuart Mossop<\/strong> (swimming) of the Missouri University of Science and Technology,\u00a0Maxim Shcherbakov<\/strong> (swimming) of Fresno Pacific, and\u00a0Michael Squeglia<\/strong> (water polo) of Gannon were named to the third team.<\/p>\n On the women’s side,\u00a0West Florida senior diver Monica Amaral<\/strong> and Wingate senior swimmer Vika Arkhipova<\/strong> conclude their respective careers with back-to-back CoSIDA Academic All-America\u00ae first team trophies. Amaral has a 3.87 G.P.A. with her double major of engineering and building construction, while Arkhipova earned her degree in marketing thanks to her 3.92 G.P.A.<\/p>\n Amaral repeated as national champion in both the one-meter and the three-meter diving competitions in this year\u2019s NCAA Division II swimming and diving competition in Birmingham, Alabama. Her top scores in each event ranked in the top three across all college divisions this year. In addition to her four national diving championships, Amaral was a two-time CSCAA National Diver of the Year and a six-time All-American. She was named the NSISC Diver of the Year in each of her seasons at West Florida.<\/p>\n This year, Arkhipova had five All-American swims at the 2017 NCAA Division II national championship meet. She finished second in the 200 backstroke and the 400 freestyle relay as Wingate claimed third place. In 2016, Arkhipova and her teammates finished a school-record second place at NCAAs as she was a part of two national championship swims in the 400 Medley Relay and the 200 Backstroke. The Bulldogs set a national record in the 400 Medley Relay with their time of 3:37.80. She was a five-time All-American at the same 2016 NCAA event.<\/p>\n Carson-Newman University senior swimmer\u00a0Nancy Claire Smith<\/strong> made the jump to 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America DII Women’s At-Large first team after earning second team laurels in 2016.<\/p>\n Smith was the first student-athlete in Carson-Newman history to win the NCAA Elite 90 Award, achieving the feat at the 2016 NCAA Division II swimming and diving championship meet. This year, Smith was an honorable mention All-American as a part of the Eagles\u2019 800 free relay quartet. She was an All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference performer in the same event. Academically, she posted a 4.00 G.P.A. with her double major of biochemistry and religion. Smith was one of six seniors who were the first four-year members of the Carson-Newman swimming team.<\/p>\n UC San Diego swimmer\u00a0Jaimie Bryan<\/strong> and Wayne State (Mich.) swimmer\u00a0Manuela Ferreira<\/strong> were also named to the\u00a02017 CoSIDA Academic All-America DII Women’s At-Large first team. Bryan was a third team honoree in 2016, wile Ferreira was named to the third team in 2015.<\/p>\n Bryan holds a 3.70 G.P.A. with her double major of physiology and neuroscience. In 2017, she was a two-time All-American at the NCAA Division II national championship meet. Bryan swam a season-best time in the 200 breaststroke to take fifth place. She was also an All-American in the 100 Breaststroke, an event she won at the 2017 Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference championship meet. Bryan was the 200 Breaststroke champion at the A3 Performance Invite.<\/p>\n Ferreira maintained a 3.81 G.P.A. during her five years at Wayne State (Mich.), while studying chemical engineering.\u00a0 A three-time first team All-American in 2017, Ferreira placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke, and was on the third place 200 medley relay and sixth place 400 medley relay.\u00a0 In her career, Ferreira was a six-time All-American along with being a six-time conference champion (three times in the 200 medley relay, twice in the 400 medley relay, and once in the 100 breaststroke).\u00a0 She redshirted in 2016 in an attempt to make the Colombian Olympic Swimming Team.<\/p>\n Tess Hayward<\/strong> (swimming) of West Chester University,\u00a0Madeline Pitt<\/strong> (swimming) of West Florida, and\u00a0Emma Wahlstrom<\/strong> (swimming) of Nova Southeastern University were each named to the second team.<\/p>\n Lauren Boyer<\/strong> (water polo) of the UC San Diego,\u00a0Grace Reichard<\/strong> (swimming) of Ashland, and\u00a0McKenzie Stevens<\/strong> (swimming) of Queens (N.C.) were announced as members of the 18-member third team.<\/p>\n Twenty-four (18 women, six men) on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Division II At-Large Teams have a 4.00 G.P.A.
