MIAMI (June 6, 2017) \u2013 FIU Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia<\/strong> announced on Tuesday the contract extension of FIU Swimming and Diving Coach Randy Horner<\/strong> through 2021. Horner has been at the helm of FIU Swimming and Diving since 2010.<\/p>\n

\u201cRandy Horner has done a tremendous job with our swimming and diving program,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cUnder his leadership, FIU has become the premier team in the conference and now turns its sights on the nation. We are thrilled to continue to have him lead FIU swimming and diving and look forward to great things ahead for the program.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m excited to solidify my future here at FIU for another four years,\u201d Horner said. \u201cThe stability of the staff within our program has been a big part of our team\u2019s growth and success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Horner guided FIU to its third-straight conference title this past season, posting the fourth-highest point total in C-USA Championship history. The Panthers claimed 14 of the 21 total titles during the four-day championships en route to a 922.5-point result.<\/p>\n

In all, FIU won 41 medals, including 14 gold, while setting 10 school records as Horner was named the C-USA Coach of the Year \u2013 his third-straight and fourth such award in the last seven years.<\/p>\n

The squad also saw a record number of Panthers compete in this year\u2019s NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, including C-USA Diver of the Year Rebecca Quesnel<\/strong>, who became the program\u2019s first-ever First-Team All-American with a third-place finish in the platform. The Panthers posted 16 points in the championships to place 32nd overall, marking the first time FIU had placed in the NCAA Championships.<\/p>\n

FIU also earned College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team honors during the fall semester. FIU has been named a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team for eight-straight semesters and 12 overall since Horner took the program\u2019s reins in 2010-11.<\/p>\n

Wrapping up his seventh season at FIU, Horner has had five conference swimmers of the year, six conference divers of the year and the Panthers have won 54 gold medals in conference-championship competition.<\/p>\n
