{"id":259221,"date":"2017-06-06T11:00:12","date_gmt":"2017-06-06T18:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=259221"},"modified":"2017-06-06T10:52:46","modified_gmt":"2017-06-06T17:52:46","slug":"lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-jay-litherland-amazing-double","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-jay-litherland-amazing-double\/","title":{"rendered":"LumaLanes Performance of the Week: Jay Litherland\u2019s Amazing Double"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s Performance Of The Week, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lumalanes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sponsored by LumaLanes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, goes to <\/span><b>Jay Litherland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jay-litherland-surprises-in-200-free-20-minutes-after-400-im-win\/\" target=\"_blank\">who completed an impressive double<\/a> on the third night of the 2017 Santa Clara stop of the Arena Pro Series.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LumaLanes Performance of the Week -- June 6, 2017 -- Jay Litherland\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JF5PsijrJoA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming in the first two events in finals, Litherland secured a win the 400 IM before coming back 20 minutes later to take a surprise win the 200 free from lane 7, an event that (until now) he hasn\u2019t had much of an impact on the national scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Litherland is well-known as a 400 IMer after he finished a surprising second place behind teammate <\/span><b>Chase Kalisz <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the 2016 US Trials, running <\/span><b>Ryan Lochte <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the last 100, and went on to finish fifth in the event in Rio. The 4:13.79 is just under three seconds off of his lifetime best from Trials last summer and is a few tenths faster than his in-season best from June of last year heading into Omaha, showing he is in a great place heading into US Nationals in a few weeks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what truly made Litherland\u2019s performance special was what came after. With just 20 minutes after arguably the most grueling event on the schedule the rising Georgia senior came back with a come from behind win in the 200 free that we\u2019re used to seeing from him in the 400 IM. Touching the wall in 1:49.28, Litherland used a great second half to pass by three members of the U.S. 800 free relay team from Rio. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/video-interview-jay-litherland-trusting-his-training-heading-into-this-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\">In an interview following his races<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Litherland explained that the 200 will be a major focus event for him heading into this summer. His best is a 1:48.41 from the Indianapolis Pro Series stop last year, and while he failed to make it out of prelims at Olympic Trials he says failing to manage the emotion of qualifying in the 400 IM
