CHARLOTTE, June 9. OLYMPIC 200 fly champ Tom Malchow raced to a snappy 1:55.82 clocking here this evening to highlight the third day of competition at the UltraSwim Invitational (50 M) at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club Pool. Malchow's time was almost seven seconds faster than former University of Virginia All-America runner-up Doak Finch's 2:05.57.<\/p>\n

On the all-time performances' list Malchow now has numbers 2,4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11 and, of course, won Sydney gold last September. All that's missing is a return of his world record that Phelps lowered to an amazing 1:54.92 at last March's World Championship Trials in Austin (the first and only swimmer ever under 1:55.0), and that may well come at the World Championships in Fukuoka next month.<\/p>\n

In the women's fly Mary Descenza, who won at Ann Arbor in 2:13.6, dropped to a pr 2:11.84 tonight, showing that she's not just a 100 flyer any longer — where her seasonal and career-best is a 59.39 from the Trials.<\/p>\n

Olympian Haley Cope, a Cal junior-to-be, held off Georgia All-America Stefanie Williams to win the 50 free (26.11-26.65) with Florida State star Christy Cech (26.87) third. On the men's side it was the U.S.' Matt Marshall edging Jamaican Olympian Sion Brinn and Circle's Tommy Hannan, 23.95-23.96-23.96.<\/p>\n

NCAA Swimmer of the Year Natalie Coughlin, Cope's teammate at Berkeley who swims for the Terrapins during the USS season, upstaged her teammate in the
\n100 back, 1:02.45-1:02.84. Coughlin's seasonal and pr is a 1:01.32 from the Trials so 1:02.4 in mid-season is quite good indeed. Georgia's Marc Lindsay, swimming for the Athens Bulldogs, was the men's 100 back champ (57.26), with Auburn's Bryce Hunt (58.02) and Hannan (58.08) rounding out the top three finishers.<\/p>\n

Athens' Kristy Kowal, winner of the 100 breast last evening and who also swept both breast races at Ann Arbor, made it four-for-four here with a 2:29.02 200 triumph over North Carolina's Katie Hatahaway's 2:35.92.<\/p>\n

Kowal is working fulltime as an elementary school teacher in Athens yet continues to swim (and be competitive) at the highest level of her sport. She will represent the United States at Fukuoka in both breaststroke races and perhaps may swim the 50 too.<\/p>\n

Her Athens teammate, Elvin Chia, followed suit in the men's race, winning in 2:17.43 to North Carolina's Sean Quinn's 2:19.50. Chia also won both breaststroke races at Ann Arbor while Quinn was an All-America in the 200 breast this past season for Coach Frank Comfort's University of North Carolina Tar Heels.<\/p>\n

U.S. Trials runner-up Brendan Hansen (Circle C) was third (2:19.87). Hansen, a freshman at Texas, went a pr 2:12.67 to finish second behind Ed Moses to make the plane to Japan. That time is third-quickest this year as Australia's Jim Piper's 2:12.40 from a meet in Canet a few days ago is now No. 2. Hansen's time is also a 17-18 national age group record.<\/p>\n

In the 400 free, Silvia Szalai won in 4:17.11 to Badger Kim Kelly's 4:19.01. On the men's side Olympian Chris Thompson, who broke former Michigander Tom Dolan's "unbreakable" 1650 American record at this year's NCAAs, used a strong back half to defeat Circle C's Scott Goldblatt, 3:56.76-3:57.98, with Fran Crippen (Germantown) third in 3:58.97.<\/p>\n

Athens Bulldogs' women's 400 medley relay team, with breaststroker Ashley Roby (Ashley Roby!!!) leading off with a 1:07.95 backstroke split, won over North Carolina Aquatics (4:22.42-4:29.11). In the men's medley, Circle C parlayed Nate Dusing's 58.11 leadoff leg to a 3:46.81-3:49.81 win over Athens, which featured Lindsay's 57.34 opening split — fastest of the evening.<\/p>\n
