The final morning prelims session at the 2017 arena Pro Swim Series stop in Santa Clara, Calif., saw Canada’s\u00a0Kylie Masse\u00a0<\/strong>and Cardinal Aquatics’\u00a0Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>each blast quick times in their respective events, the 100 back and 200 fly, to set up the meet’s last evening session.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 fly<\/h3>\n

Cardinal’s\u00a0Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>goes for her third win of the weekend in the women’s 200 fly as she easily finished atop the field in prelims. She touched in 2:09.37, just off her season-best time of 2:09.04 that ranks fourth in the world this year. Cal’s\u00a0Katie McLaughlin\u00a0<\/strong>finished three seconds back, but her 2:12.21 was good for the No. 2 seed.<\/p>\n

Longhorn’s\u00a0Lauren Case\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in prelims in 2:12.83, and Venezuela’s\u00a0Isabella Paez<\/strong> qualified fouith in 2:13.61. Longhorn’s\u00a0Remedy Rule\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.02), Mexico’s\u00a0Maria Roman Mantilla\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.27) and\u00a0Diana Luna Sanchez\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.28) and Georgia’s\u00a0Caitlin Casazza\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.23) also made the championship final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 fly<\/h3>\n
Cal’s\u00a0Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>pushed his way to the top time in the morning prelims of the 200 fly. Shields touched in 1:58.90 to edge out North Baltimore’s\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong> (1:59.08) and Athens Bulldog’s\u00a0Pace Clark<\/strong> (1:59.09).<\/p>\n
Athens Bulldog’s\u00a0Gunnar Bentz<\/strong> and Dynamo’s\u00a0Mick Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>also broke 2:00, finishing with times of 1:59.74 and 1:59.79, respectively, while Cal’s\u00a0Mike Thomas\u00a0<\/strong>was just behind in 2:00.14.<\/p>\n
Jack Conger\u00a0<\/strong>will look to add to his 100 fly victory from earlier in the meet in the 200-meter event, but he will have to do so from an outside lane after qualifying seventh in 2:00.78. Also getting into the final were\u00a0Marcos Lavado<\/strong>\u00a0(2:01.09) and\u00a0Hector<\/strong>\u00a0Ruvalcaba Cruz<\/strong> (2:01.66).<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 breast<\/h3>\n
Cal’s\u00a0Marina Garcia\u00a0<\/strong>threw down the top qualifying time in the women’s 100 breast with her mark of 1:09.24, while Argentina’s\u00a0Macarena Ceballos\u00a0<\/strong>joined her under 1:10 with a time of 1:09.58.<\/p>\n
UMBC’s\u00a0Emily Escobedo\u00a0<\/strong>qualified third in 1:10.15, followed by USC’s\u00a0Riley Scott\u00a0<\/strong>(1:10.33). Wisconsin’s\u00a0Maria Carlson<\/strong> and Mexico’s\u00a0Melissa Rodriguez<\/strong> tied for fifth in 1:10.70, while\u00a0Ema Rajic\u00a0<\/strong>(1:11.02), Hong Kong’s\u00a0Jamie Zhen Yeung\u00a0<\/strong>(1:11.07) and Stanford’s\u00a0Kim Williams\u00a0<\/strong>(1:11.10) also made the final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 breast<\/h3>\n
Former American record-holder\u00a0Kevin Cordes\u00a0<\/strong>established the top time for the final by a half-second, finishing in 1:01.08 to secure lane five for the evening swim. Cardina’s\u00a0Carlos Claverie\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 1:01.57, and Mexico’s\u00a0Miguel De Lara Ojeda\u00a0<\/strong>touched third in 1:01.67. De Lara has plenty of early speed in the 200 breast two days earlier, so he could be poised for a quick swim at night.<\/p>\n
Race Pace Club’s\u00a0Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.80) and Georgia’s\u00a0Nic Fink<\/strong> (1:01.89) also broke 1:02, while Longhorn’s\u00a0Will Licon<\/strong> qualified sixth in 1:02.22. Rounding out the final were Cal’s\u00a0Connor Hoppe\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.87), Stanford’s\u00a0Hank Poppe\u00a0<\/strong>(1:03.19) and King’s\u00a0Daniel Roy<\/strong> (1:03.24).<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 back<\/h3>\n
Canada’s\u00a0Kylie Masse\u00a0<\/strong>almost broke the world record earlier in the year in the 100 back, finishing less than a tenth off at 58.21. She almost posted another sub-1:00 effort in the morning prelims at Santa Clara, finishing in 1:00.12. She should be heavily favored in the final, especially with Olympic silver medalist\u00a0Kathleen Baker\u00a0<\/strong>pulling out of the race.<\/p>\n
Riptide’s\u00a0Regan Smith\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second, but she was more than a second back in 1:01.14. Cal’s\u00a0Amy Bilquist\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 1:01.61, while Island’s\u00a0Hilary Caldwell<\/strong>, the 200 back winner from a night earlier, was fourth in 1:01.86.<\/p>\n
North Carolina Aquatic Club’s\u00a0Hellen Moffitt\u00a0<\/strong>picked up the fifth seed with her time of 1:01.90, and she was followed by Island’s\u00a0Danielle Hanus\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.20), Mexico’s\u00a0Fernanda Gonzalez\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.27), North Carolina Aquatic Club’s\u00a0Caroline Baldwin\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.43) and Stanford’s\u00a0Erin Voss\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.45).<\/p>\n

Cardinal’s\u00a0Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong> finished atop an impressive field in the men’s two-lap dorsal race. He held off the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the event, Cal’s\u00a0Ryan Murphy<\/strong>, to touch first in the final heat and record the top overall qualifying time at 54.71. Murphy qualified second in 55.01, just ahead of teammate\u00a0Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>(55.19).<\/p>\n
2012 Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Matt Grevers<\/strong>, representing Tucson Ford, qualified fourth in 55.59. Indiana’s\u00a0Bob Glover\u00a0<\/strong>was next in 55.78, just ahead of Ajax’s\u00a0Javier Acevedo<\/strong> (55.81).<\/p>\n
Also finishing in the top nine were Gator’s\u00a0Corey Main\u00a0<\/strong>(56.23), Arizona State’s\u00a0Richard Bohus\u00a0<\/strong>(56.66) and Rockwood’s\u00a0Jack Dolan\u00a0<\/strong>(56.87).<\/p>\n

Longhorn’s\u00a0Madisyn Cox<\/strong>, going after her third win of the weekend, secured the top seed with her mark of 2:15.06. She’s already won the the 200 breast and 400 IM, both right on her lifetime best times, and she will have lane five in the 200 IM final after finishing in 2:15.06.<\/p>\n
Island teammates\u00a0Sarah Darcel\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.73) and\u00a0Mackenzie Padington<\/strong> (2:15.83) qualified second and third, respectively, and UMBC’s\u00a0Emily Escobedo<\/strong> took fourth in 2:16.79.<\/p>\n
Stanford’s\u00a0Allie Szekely<\/strong>, who was third in the 400 IM earlier in the meet, qualified fifth in 2:16.96, just ahead of Hong Kong’s\u00a0Siobhan Haughey\u00a0<\/strong>(2:16.98). Mexico’s\u00a0Monica Gonzelez-Hermosillo\u00a0<\/strong>(2:17.07), Gamecock’s\u00a0Emma Barksdale\u00a0<\/strong>(2:17.42) and Minnesota’s\u00a0Brooke Zeiger\u00a0<\/strong>(2:17.54) also made the championship final.<\/p>\n
Elizabeth Beisel\u00a0<\/strong>would have qualified for the final but was disqualified for going past 15 meters on the start.<\/p>\n

Race Pace Club’s\u00a0Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>placed first in the final prelims event of the meet, touching in 2:01.75 to edge out Stanford’s\u00a0Abrahm DeVine\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.90).\u00a0Mohamed Hussein\u00a0<\/strong>finished well back in third in 2:03.16, just ahead of Athens Bulldog’s\u00a0Nic Fink\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.17) and\u00a0Dynamo’s\u00a0Jay Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.19).<\/p>\n
Litherland will be going for another event win after doubling up in the 400 IM and 200 free. Also qualifying for the final were Longhorn’s\u00a0Will Licon\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.94), Cal’s\u00a0Matthew Josa\u00a0<\/strong>(2:03.95), Venezuela’s\u00a0Jean Sequera\u00a0<\/strong>(2:04.43) and Ridgefield’s\u00a0Kieran Smith<\/strong> (2:04.54).<\/p>\n
