She touched in 2:09.37, just off her season-best time of 2:09.04 that ranks fourth in the world this year. Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Katie McLaughlin\u00a0<\/strong>finished three seconds back, but her 2:12.21 was good for the No. 2 seed.<\/p>\n<p>Longhorn&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lauren Case\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in prelims in 2:12.83, and Venezuela&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Isabella Paez<\/strong> qualified fouith in 2:13.61. Shields touched in 1:58.90 to edge out North Baltimore&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong> (1:59.08) and Athens Bulldog&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Pace Clark<\/strong> (1:59.09).<\/p>\n<p>Athens Bulldog&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gunnar Bentz<\/strong> and Dynamo&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mick Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>also broke 2:00, finishing with times of 1:59.74 and 1:59.79, respectively, while Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mike Thomas\u00a0<\/strong>was just behind in 2:00.14.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jack Conger\u00a0<\/strong>will look to add to his 100 fly victory from earlier in the meet in the 200-meter event, but he will have to do so from an outside lane after qualifying seventh in 2:00.78. Cardina&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Carlos Claverie\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 1:01.57, and Mexico&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Miguel De Lara Ojeda\u00a0<\/strong>touched third in 1:01.67. De Lara has plenty of early speed in the 200 breast two days earlier, so he could be poised for a quick swim at night.<\/p>\n<p>Race Pace Club&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.80) and Georgia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nic Fink<\/strong> (1:01.89) also broke 1:02, while Longhorn&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Will Licon<\/strong> qualified sixth in 1:02.22. She almost posted another sub-1:00 effort in the morning prelims at Santa Clara, finishing in 1:00.12. She should be heavily favored in the final, especially with Olympic silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Kathleen Baker\u00a0<\/strong>pulling out of the race.<\/p>\n<p>Riptide&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second, but she was more than a second back in 1:01.14. He held off the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the event, Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong>, to touch first in the final heat and record the top overall qualifying time at 54.71. Murphy qualified second in 55.01, just ahead of teammate\u00a0<strong>Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>(55.19).<\/p>\n<p>2012 Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Matt Grevers<\/strong>, representing Tucson Ford, qualified fourth in 55.59. She&#8217;s already won the the 200 breast and 400 IM, both right on her lifetime best times, and she will have lane five in the 200 IM final after finishing in 2:15.06.<\/p>\n<p>Island teammates\u00a0<strong>Sarah Darcel\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.73) and\u00a0<strong>Mackenzie Padington<\/strong> (2:15.83) qualified second and third, respectively, and UMBC&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Escobedo<\/strong> took fourth in 2:16.79.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Allie Szekely<\/strong>, who was third in the 400 IM earlier in the meet, qualified fifth in 2:16.96, just ahead of Hong Kong&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Siobhan Haughey\u00a0<\/strong>(2:16.98).
