AUSTRALIANS turned in three stunning victories on Day One of the Mare Nostrum tour meet in Rome, stunning a capacity crowd that had turned out to see Italy&#39;s Olympic champions in action.  Ian Thorpe, Jim Piper and Clementine Stoney were the spoilers from Down Under.<\/p>\n<p>Triple Olympic champion Thorpe relegated local heroes, Massimiliano Rossolini and Emiliano Brembila to maintain his three-year domination of the 400 meter freestyle in a time of 3:44.71 \u2013 to win by over two-and-half seconds.  Rossolino, who won Olympic gold in Sydney in the 200m individual medley and the silver medal behind Thorpe in the 400m at the Games, was again no match for the Olympic champion, settling for silver again in 3:47.32, with Olympic fourth place finisher, Brembila third in 3:50.08.<\/p>\n<p>Thorpe (49.85) later won bronze in the 100m freestyle behind Russian legend and 50-meter world record record holder Alex Popov (49.49) and Olympic butterfly champion Lars Frolander (49.78), with Australia\u2019s Todd Pearson fourth in 50.13.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#39;s latest rising star, Jim Piper, claimed the prized scalp of Italy\u2019s Olympic champion Domenico Fioravanti and five other locals, including Olympic bronze medalist Davide Rummolo (who finished fifth), to chalk up his second Tour victory in the 200 meter breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>Piper was just 0.02 secs outside his own Australian record, winning in 2:12.42 \u2013 a time, which would have won him silver behind Fioravanti in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old from Ingleburn has had a stunning impact on international swimming, breaking the Australian record at the East Asian Games and then lowering it again to 2:12.40 in Canet just last week.<\/p>\n<p>Only five swimmers, world record holder Mike Barrowman (USA), Fioravianti, Ed Moses (USA), Norbert Rosza (Hungry) and Nick Gillingham (Great Britain) have ever clocked under 2:12.00 with Gillingham\u2019s 2:11.29 the Commonwealth record since 1992.<\/p>\n<p>Stoney also won her second Tour gold medal, taking the 200m backstroke in 2:13.31, from Toshie Abe (Japan) 2:14.84 and Stanislava Komorova (Russia) 2:15.07.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-year-old had earlier won the Canet meet and will now head back to the AIS in Canberra on Wednesday to prepare for the Telstra Grand Prix in Melbourne next weekend.<\/p>\n<p>But the Aussies were far from the only story in the Eternal City.  Costa Rica&#39;s Claudia Poll &#8211; the 1996 Olympic gold medalist and 2000 bronze medalist &#8211; showed her heels to a strong 200m freestyle field to win in 1:59.02, the world&#39;s fastest time this year.  Russia&#39;s Nadezhda Chemezova, fourth at the Sydney Olympics, was second in 2:00.72.<\/p>\n<p>America&#39;s triple Olympic gold medalist and world record-holder, Lenny Krayzelburg, shook off a shoulder injury that had kept him out of the Canet meet, to win the 100m back in 55.52.
