Terrapins' Natalie Coughlin (2:03.45) took the bronze.

The 25-year-old Szalai is a member of Germany's national team and has a pr of 2:00.59 from the 1999 European Championships in Istanbul. She currently
ranks 26th globally with her 2:01.77 from the German Nationals/World Championship Trials in Braunschweig last month.

In the men's race it was Texas' Chris Kemp, swimming for Circle C, touching in 1:53.13 to edge Cincinnati Marlins' Dan Ketchum (1:53.29) and Circle C's Nate Dusing (1:53.37). Ketchum will be a sophomore next fall for Coach Jon Urbancek's Michigan Wolverines while Dusing was a member of both the U.S.' silver medal-winning 800 free relay team at Sydney and Coach Eddie Reese's Texas Longhorn squad, which won its second-consecutive NCAA Championship last March at College Station. Another member of those two relays, Scott Goldblatt, took the B Final in 1:53.04, faster than Kemp's winning time.

At NCAAs Dusing made his collegiate swansong a memorable one as he won a pair of races, the 200 IM and 200 back, his initial college individual titles. He was runner-up to teammate (and fellow Olympian) Ian Crocker in the 100 fly, and swam key legs on several winning relays.

Veteran breaststroker Kristy Kowal, AR-holder in the 200 off her silver medal-winning performance at Sydney, won the 100 this evening in 1:09.86 to
former Georgia teammate Ashley Roby's 1:13.00. A close third was North Carolina AC's Katie Hathaway (1:13.07). Hathaway swims for Coach Frank Comfort's Atlantic Coast Conference Champion North Carolina Tar Heels during the collegiate season, and was ACC champ in the 200 breast.

The Athens Bulldogs, Georgia Coach Jack Bauerle's USS club, made it a clean sweep when Malaysian Olympian Elvin Chia won the men's 100. Chia swam 1:03.57 to 1:04.51 for Circle C runner-up Brendan Hansen, NCAA 100-200 breast champ for Texas this past season. Hansen, American record-holder in the yards version of the 200 breast, will get a chance for a rematch next month in Fukuoka at the World Championships as he will swim both the 100 and 200 breast — as will Chia.

WC teammate Mary Descenza, who set a national prep record in the 100 fly at the Illinois state high school championships this season, gained a measure
of revenge tonight when she defeated Coughlin, 59.73-1:00.53. Coughlin won their Trials race by .01, 59.38-59.39.

In the men's event it was Michigan's Olympic champ, Tom Malchow, cruising to a 54.89-55.13 win over Circle C's Tommy Hannan. Hannan got his second NCAA ring for the Longhorns in March and also was an Olympian in the 100 fly at Sydney. A second Texan, Bryan Jones, was third (56.07) whle Crocker (56.08) finished fourth.

Villanova All-America Maddie Crippen, a Sydney Olympian herself, was fastest in the 400 IM (4:56.09) with Hatahaway next(4:57.64)and TPA's [Tritons of
Petersburg Aquatics] Mirjana Boseveka (4:57.88) taking the bronze. Boseveka was ACC woman's Swimmer of the Year for Coach Mark Bernardino's Virginia Cavaliers and represents Macedonia internationally.

Erik Vendt, Sydney silver medalist and 2000 NCAA champ for Coach Mark Schubert's USC Trojans, won the men's 400 IM (4:29.88). Runner-up was Crippen's "kid" brother, Fran (4:33.22). Third was Gator Swimming's Eric Donnelly (4:33.86), an NCAA finalist.

The women's 400 sprint relay went to Braden Swim & Tennis (3:57.37) with Gator Swimming second (4:00.69) and Greater Toledo third (4:00.73). Germantown's Williams had the fastest leadoff, 57.75.

The men's title went to Circle C, with Kemp's 51.86 the quickest leadoff. The only other sub 52 leadoff went to Auburn Aquatics' French Olympian Romain Barnier (51.90). Barnier was a member of Coach David Marsh's Auburn NCAA Championship squad a few years ago.

— Bill Bell

CHARLOTTE ULTRASWIM
Charlotte, NC, U.S.A.
June 8,, 2001
50 meter pool
Event 3 Women 200 Meter Freestyle
===============================================================================
World: !
