The list, essentially of the 100 most famous athletes on the planet, was developed through a formula created by\u00a0<strong>Ben Alamar<\/strong>, ESPN&#8217;s director of analytics.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main sources for data included endorsement deals, which is why you will not see any amateur athletes such as <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> on the list. Additionally, all officially retired athletes, such as <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong>, are also excluded. Phelps, however, was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/espn\/feature\/story\/_\/id\/15685581\/espn-world-fame-100\" target=\"_blank\">number 46<\/a> on ESPN&#8217;s World Fame 100 List in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Salary was not included in the data analysis because of variance between sports, but Google searches and social media followings were used. Input from ESPN journalists around the world was also considered. The full methodology for determining who made the list and in what order can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/espn\/feature\/story\/_\/page\/worldfame100\/espn-world-fame-100-top-ranking-athletes#S1__Methodology\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the second year in a row, <strong>Cristiano Ronaldo<\/strong>, <strong>Lebron James<\/strong> and <strong>Lionel Messi<\/strong> claimed the top three spots on the list. Zetao was the highest-ranked Chinese athlete on the list.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Before the race, I didn&#8217;t even think about a medal, I just wanted to show my best. His 12 Olympic medals, half gold, help as well.<\/p>\n<p>ESPN also credits Lochte&#8217;s Rio scandal to his fame, as the series of events, followed by his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-today-report-ryan-lochte-suspended-10-months-banned-from-2017-world-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\">10-month suspension<\/a> cost him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/speedo-drops-ryan-lochte-pledges-to-donate-50k-to-charity\/\" target=\"_blank\">endorsements<\/a> but also skyrocketed his name in the search engines.<\/p>\n<p>His performances for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ryan-lochte-eliminated-from-dancing-with-the-stars\/\" target=\"_blank\">eight weeks on &#8220;Dancing with the Stars&#8221;<\/a> also contributed to his status as the 67th most famous athlete in the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ESPN posted its second annual World Fame 100 List on May 30.
