SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, December 4. BOTH University of Utah swimming teams overcame the Seattle Redhawks on Friday night with the women scoring 190 \u2013 104 while the men tallied a total of 155 \u2013 122.<\/p>\n
"This time of year is really hard with all of the training we are doing and where we are at," said head coach Greg Winslow. "We have finals in a week and the kids are stressed about that. They are mentally and physically stressed out right now. But I was happy to see them get out and race well tonight."<\/p>\n
The winning 400 medley relay of Elizabeth Thompson, Nicole Ligeza, Hannah Caron, and Natalie Edge started off a very successful night for the Utes (3:56.60).<\/p>\n
Zuch finished first place in the 1000 free (10:36.11), the 50 free (24.61), and the 100 free (53.10).<\/p>\n
"I felt really good about my races tonight even though they weren't my strongest events," said Zuch."Tomorrow, I swim my best events [against Arkansas] so I'm a little nervous about that."<\/p>\n
Swartz finished barely behind Zuch in the 50 free (24.70) and the 100 free (53.25).<\/p>\n
Other victories for the Ute women include Chardonnay Biter-Mundt in the 200 free (1:55.39), Jana Willsey in the 200 fly (2:08.20), Maiya Otsuka in the 400 IM (4:37.48), and Danielle Caldwell in the 100 back (1:00.16) and the 200 back (2:07.43).<\/p>\n
To end the night, Edge, Traycie Swartz, Samantha Zuch, and Kristina Evans finished first in the 200 free relay (1:36.67).<\/p>\n
On the diving boards, Kwan Ling Yu ("Queenie") held the top score in the 1-meter dive (249.90) and the 3-meter dive (275.85). For the men, Nelson Foo scored the highest in the 1-meter dive (298.80) as well as the 3-meter dive (281.10).<\/p>\n
"The men faced a very fast sprinter tonight and that was a good lesson for them," Winslow said. "It's important for the freshmen to learn to take things more seriously." <\/p>\n
Major Robinson, Garrett Peterson, Karson Applin, and Andy Lamb took home the win in the 200 medley relay at the beginning of the night (3:27.05). Robinson also won the 100 back (52.63) and the 200 back (1:52.93) while Peterson won the 100 breast (58.13) and the 200 breast (2:09.02).<\/p>\n
Eric Bonicelli finished first in the 500 free (4:46.34) and the 200 fly (1:54.24). <\/p>\n
"I feel like I could have swum better with my technique. I know I could have gone faster," admitted Bonicelli. "[The men] could have done better getting off of the wall since we were getting out touched in a couple events. That shouldn't have happened."<\/p>\n
"The way Eric Murray is fighting through things right now is really great," said Winslow.<\/p>\n
Murray finished in second right on Bonicelli's heels in the 500 free (4:46.55) as well as second in the 200 free (1:42.72).<\/p>\n
Other wins for the Ute men include the 1000 free by Ryan Hansen (10:01.04) and the 100 free by Brent Murray (47.43).<\/p>\n
"Our men are done for the semester so now we can get some more training in," Winslow said. "The women will have a big test tomorrow morning."<\/p>\n
The Ute women will take on the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Ute Natatorium for their final meet of the semester.<\/p>\n
