{"id":258558,"date":"2017-06-02T09:44:00","date_gmt":"2017-06-02T16:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=258558"},"modified":"2017-06-02T11:11:44","modified_gmt":"2017-06-02T18:11:44","slug":"nag-record-holder-emma-muzzy-verbally-commits-to-nc-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nag-record-holder-emma-muzzy-verbally-commits-to-nc-state\/","title":{"rendered":"NAG Record Holder Emma Muzzy Verbally Commits to NC State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=emma+muzzy\" target=\"_blank\">Emma Muzzy<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has announced her verbal commitment to continue her collegiate swimming career at NC State beginning in the 2018-2019 season.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;ll make the move to Raleigh after graduating from Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Virginia where she also swims with the Virginia Gators and currently holds 20 state records.<\/p>\n<p>A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, Muzzy is the strongest IMer in the Class of 2018, along with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/florida-collects-verbal-commit-from-versatile-vanessa-pearl\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vanessa Pearl<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>who verbally committed to the Florida Gators on Wednesday. Despite that, Muzzy\u00a0actually pulls in the most USA Swimming power points in the backstroke events. She sits just outside NCAA scoring in the 400 IM and is within striking distance in both backstroke events as well.<\/p>\n<p>Her best SCY times are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>100 Back 52.65<\/li>\n<li>200 Back 1:53.38<\/li>\n<li>200 IM 1:57.84<\/li>\n<li>400 IM 4:08.37<\/li>\n<li>200 Breast 2:13.59<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Muzzy\u00a0told\u00a0<em>Swimming World:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cI\u00a0am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to swim for NC State.\u00a0 I&#8217;m excited to swim with a team and coaching staff\u00a0that is so close, confident, and hungry for more! #gopack\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Muzzy is one of only two girls (<strong>Zoe Bartel\u00a0<\/strong>being the other)\u00a0in this class to hold a short course National Age Group record, and she has a hand in four of them. The Virginia Gators went on a record breaking roll this March\u00a0in the 15-16 relays and Muzzy was key to those swims. She posted a 22.53 split on the third leg of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-gators-down-two-swimmac-15-16-girls-relay-nags\/\" target=\"_blank\">200 freestyle relay<\/a> when the team posted a 1:30.99. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-gators-blast-past-15-16-400-free-relay-nag-record\/\" target=\"_blank\">400 freestyle relay<\/a> she went second in 49.33 as the team touched in 3:19.52.<\/p>\n<p>Muzzy then demonstrated her versatility swimming backstroke (24.97) on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-gators-down-two-swimmac-15-16-girls-relay-nags\/\" target=\"_blank\">200 medley relay<\/a> (1:39.21) and breaststroke (1:01.91) on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-gators-break-15-16-400-medley-relay-national-age-group-record\/\" target=\"_blank\">400 medley relay<\/a> (3:36.53). On that medley relay Muzzy was only two tenths slower than Olympian\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=kathleen+baker\" target=\"_blank\">Kathleen Baker<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>split on SwimMAC&#8217;s 2013 relay which most recently held the record. Muzzy was also nearly a second quicker than eventual Georgia Bulldog&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=Caitlin+Casazza\" target=\"_blank\">Caitlin Casazza<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>on SwimMAC&#8217;s\u00a02013 breaststroke leg.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2017 high school season Muzzy was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/records-fall-at-3a-virginia-high-school-states\/\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia 3A state champion<\/a> in the 200 IM (1:59.22) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.95). She took down the state records in both events. The school&#8217;s 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays also finished in the top three. That brings\u00a0her tally of high school state titles to nine and high school state records to six.<\/p>\n<p>She joins club teammates\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-tech-adds-in-state-talent-keith-myburgh-to-class-of-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">Keith Myburgh<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/arizona-state-class-of-2022-grows-to-four-with-verbal-commit-from-ethan-luc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Khalil Fonder<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in making verbal early commitments.<\/p>\n<p>Muzzy spoke with\u00a0<em>Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>after her fourth place finish in the 400 IM at AT&amp;T Winter Nationals in December. At the time she spoke about the nerves she dealt with at Trials and how that experience has helped her since then.
