CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia, November 20. THE Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams each tallied wins over Big Ten foes Indiana and Penn State in a two-day double dual meet that concluded Saturday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.<\/p>\n
The Cavalier men defeated the Nittany Lions 186-150 and the Hoosiers 194-159 while the UVa women beat Penn State 187-158 and Indiana 207-144.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Lauren Perdue and senior Matt McLean paced Virginia with two individual event wins each, including a handful of NCAA 'B' times.<\/p>\n
Perdue recorded her first individual event win of the day in the 50 freestyle with a NCAA 'B' time of 22.69, while teammate Emily Lloyd placed third (23.44). Perdue then nabbed a second 'B' cut with a win in the 200 free (1:47.86), with senior Kristen Moores placing second (1:49.31).<\/p>\n
McLean also claimed a victory in the 200 free, finishing in a NCAA 'B' time of 1:37.06. He helped Virginia to sweep the 1000 freestyle with a winning time of 9:05.75, while Taylor Smith took second (9:05.99) and freshman Bradley Phillips placed third (9:07.86).<\/p>\n
Virginia's Charlotte Clarke, Kelly Flynn, Liz Shaw and Lloyd opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, out-touching Penn State with a time of 1:42.76.<\/p>\n
The men's team of Jack Murfee, Taylor Grey, Peter Geissinger and Zach Kohl also took first in the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:31.04.<\/p>\n
The women had a strong showing in the 1000 free with a 1-2-3 finish of their own. Seniors Katya Bachrouche (9:56.72) and Anne Summer Myers (9:59.40) placed first and second, respectively, while freshman Rachel Naurath (10:02.00) finished third.<\/p>\n
The men's first years showed promise as well with both Taylor Grey and Phillips claiming individual event wins. Grey took touched first in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:00.11, while Phillips was victorious in the 400 IM with a mark of 3:57.11.<\/p>\n
Other individual event winners for the Cavaliers included Shaw (55.23) and senior Scot Robison (48.58), who each took first-place honors in the 100 butterfly.<\/p>\n
Both the men's and women's squads ended the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Moores, Caroline Kenney, Kelly Flynn and Perdue notched a NCAA 'B' time with a first-place finish in 3:22.60. The men's team of McLean, Geissinger, David Karasek and Robison also tallied a 'B' time, finishing in 2:59.70.<\/p>\n
The Cavaliers return to the pool Dec. 3-5 at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga.<\/p>\n
