﻿{"id":256097,"date":"2017-05-14T15:59:10","date_gmt":"2017-05-14T22:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=256097"},"modified":"2017-05-14T17:50:05","modified_gmt":"2017-05-15T00:50:05","slug":"asia-seidt-posts-world-ranked-200-back-to-close-out-atlanta-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/asia-seidt-posts-world-ranked-200-back-to-close-out-atlanta-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"Asia Seidt Posts World-Ranked 200 Back to Close Out Atlanta Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Caeleb Dressel\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Ryan Held<\/strong> faced off in their first long course 100 free since Rio in the final race of the Atlanta Classic, but it was\u00a0<strong>Asia Seidt\u00a0<\/strong>who stole the show, becoming the first American to break 2:10 this year in the women&#8217;s 200 back.<\/p>\n<p>Seidt, coming off an outstanding freshman year at Kentucky, recorded a time of 2:09.82 on her way to a two-second victory, moving to 12th in the world this year, ranking just behind\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith<\/strong> (2:09.79)\u00a0as the top American this year. The time was also Seidt&#8217;s best time by more than two seconds, improving on her previous top mark of 2:11.96.<\/p>\n<p>The United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/who-can-fill-the-void-left-by-maya-dirado\/\" target=\"_blank\">will have a void to fill this summer in the 200 back after\u00a0<strong>Maya DiRado&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>retirement<\/a>, and Seidt, who finished 21st in the event at Olympic Trials, all the sudden looks like a prime contender to challenge for a spot on the World Championships team.<\/p>\n<p>Kentucky swimmers ended up sweeping the top three spots in the event in Atlanta as\u00a0<strong>Bridgette Alexander\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 2:11.85, and\u00a0<strong>Ali Galyer\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 2:13.84.<\/p>\n<p>In that aforementioned final of the men&#8217;s 100 free, Wolfpack&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>actually stole the show from the two Olympic gold medalists, Dressel and Held. Ress touched in 49.48 to take down Auburn&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Zach Apple\u00a0<\/strong>(49.70), while Dressel was third in 49.80, and Held was fifth in 50.31.<\/p>\n<p>In the corresponding women&#8217;s event, Swim Atlanta&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Amanda Weir\u00a0<\/strong>took the victory in 55.23, exactly one second ahead of Wolfpack&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lotta\u00a0Nevalainen<\/strong> (56.23). Just behind was\u00a0<strong>Nevalainen&#8217;s<\/strong> teammate,\u00a0<strong>Ky-Lee Perry<\/strong> (56.27).<\/p>\n<p>Race Pace Club&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>held off Georgia Coastal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brennan Pastorek<\/strong> for the win in the men&#8217;s 200 IM, 2:02.25 to 2:02.76, while Wolfpack&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in 2:03.00. The top swim of the day, however, actually came from Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Josh Prenot<\/strong>, who put up a time of 1:58.94 in prelims, just off his own 13th-ranked time of 1:58.93, before scratching the final.<\/p>\n<p>Wolfpack&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hannah Moore\u00a0<\/strong>opened the session with a big win in the 800 free. She touched in N8:35.70, almost 13 seconds ahead of St. Petersburg&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Autumn Finke\u00a0<\/strong>(8:48.52). Third went to Marietta Marlins&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Stephanie Peters\u00a0<\/strong>in 8:49.31.<\/p>\n<p>Yet another NC State-trained athlete finished on top in the men&#8217;s 1500 free.\u00a0<strong>Anton Ipsen<\/strong> got the win in 15:13.33, while Gamecock&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cody Bekemeyer<\/strong> finished second in 15:49.55, and Wolfpack&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jack McIntyre\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 15:51.33.<\/p>\n<p>15-year-old\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh\u00a0<\/strong>from Nashville Aquatic Club touched first in the women&#8217;s 200 IM in 2:14.37. Nitro&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Vanessa Pearl\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 2:16.40, and Nation&#8217;s Capital&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Abby Harter\u00a0<\/strong>came in third at 2:18.69.<\/p>\n<p>NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hennessey Stuart\u00a0<\/strong>was the only man under 2:00 in the men&#8217;s 200 back, winning the race in 1:59.73.
