{"id":255593,"date":"2017-05-11T10:25:50","date_gmt":"2017-05-11T17:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=255593"},"modified":"2017-05-11T10:58:51","modified_gmt":"2017-05-11T17:58:51","slug":"six-university-of-buffalo-swimmers-suing-school-after-mens-team-cut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/six-university-of-buffalo-swimmers-suing-school-after-mens-team-cut\/","title":{"rendered":"Six University of Buffalo Swimmers Suing School After Men&#8217;s Team Cut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Six University of Buffalo swimmers are filing a lawsuit against the university after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-buffalo-to-cut-mens-swimming-and-diving-at-end-of-spring-season\/\" target=\"_blank\">it abruptly cut the men&#8217;s team in early April<\/a>, according to a report from the Buffalo student newspaper\u00a0<em>The Spectrum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Six swimmers are seeking compensation from the university in order to cover their expenses to transfer to another institution so that they can continue swimming. The university promised to honor all scholarships even after the team was cut and would allow any transfers, but transferring could lead to extreme financial burdens, in some cases $60,000 or more, for students and their families.<\/p>\n<p>Since the decision to cut the team did not come until so late, few schools had any scholarship money remaining to accommodate transfers from Buffalo.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cBy saying you can stay here, quit swimming and keep your scholarship, we\u2019re losing everything else so that\u2019s really not fair to us,&#8221; freshman swimmer <strong>Joey\u00a0Puglessi<\/strong>\u00a0told <em>The Spectrum<\/em>. &#8220;People say \u2018don\u2019t worry about the money &#8212; everything\u2019s gonna work out,\u2019 but a lot of the people that say that have never been in this position where we\u2019re on the verge of losing tens of thousands of dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cAs much as people say \u2018it\u2019s all gonna work out, you\u2019ll be fine, ignore the financial aspects,\u2019 it\u2019s just too big to ignore. [Not swimming anymore] definitely crossed my mind, academically I\u2019m doing really well here, financially I\u2019m very comfortable, at first it seemed like \u2018I\u2019ll give it up just to help my parents avoid taking out loans.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The Spectrum<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>tells the stories other swimmers involved in the suit, including Ohio-native high school senior<strong>\u00a0Carson Burt<\/strong>,\u00a0who originally committed to Buffalo but is now committed to swim at Ohio State because his parents could only afford in-state tuition.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cMy coach pulled me out of the water because he wanted to make sure I heard the right way and not from chatter from other people,\u201d Burt said. \u201cWe had an emotional moment for about an hour and a half where we were kind of like dumbfounded by the whole situation. It was like my future that I saw myself going into had fallen apart within 30 seconds and I had no idea how to react.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Richard Lydecker<\/strong>, a Buffalo swimming alum and attorney, is representing the six swimmers pro bono. Lydecker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-buffalo-swim-teams-meet-with-school-president-after-mens-team-cut\/\" target=\"_blank\">had previously threatened to sue the school on his own<\/a> (around the same time swimmers staged a sit-in at the school president&#8217;s office).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u201cI think it is so wrong that the administration would treat such a large group of kids, vulnerable kids, to treat them this way and literally throw many of their swimming or diving careers out the window,\u201d Lydecker said, according to\u00a0<em>The Spectrum<\/em>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other swimmers involved in the suit include current sophomore\u00a0<strong>Zach Towers<\/strong> and <strong>Mason Miller<\/strong>, freshman\u00a0<strong>Luke Gordon<\/strong> and incoming freshman\u00a0<strong>Trey Lowe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Read more from The Spectrum\u00a0by clicking <a
