The CIF Southern Section Division 3 Meet got things rolling with prelims on Wednesday afternoon. The swimmers returned for an exhilarating finals session on Thursday evening. There were four double event winners, including a double sprint freestyle champion for both genders.\u00a0It was an exciting night on the team side as well as both\u00a0meets came down to the final relay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emma Davidson\u00a0<\/strong>of Yorba Linda was the double sprint winner for the women. The sophomore finished the 50 in 23.35, two tenths quicker than Keppel&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michelle Martin\u00a0<\/strong>(23.56). In the 100 Davidson stopped the clock in 50.94.<\/p>\n<p>Sierra Canyon&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nate-biondi-son-of-eight-time-gold-medalist-matt-biondi-commits-to-cal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nate Biondi<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 20.27 in the 50 freestyle. Also under 21 seconds was\u00a0<strong>Thomas Finello\u00a0<\/strong>of Viewpoint with a 20.84. In the 100, Biondi clocked a 44.70. Behind the senior was Finello with a 46.49.<\/p>\n<p>The women from Poly-Pasadena opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. The team of\u00a0<strong>Susannah Laster<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gabriela Maarse<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kate Fogassa<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Rachel Min\u00a0<\/strong>touched in 1:49.20.<\/p>\n<p>Walnut freshman\u00a0<strong>Alexis Grant\u00a0<\/strong>edged Crossroads junior\u00a0<strong>Clare Larsen\u00a0<\/strong>1:52.52 to 1:52.73 for the 200 freestyle title. Grant&#8217;s teammate\u00a0<strong>Emily Honng\u00a0<\/strong>then dominated the 200 IM in 2:05.38, three seconds ahead of teammate\u00a0<strong>Cara Le\u00a0<\/strong>(2:08.25).<\/p>\n<p>After impressive individual finishes, the women from Walnut teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay in meet record time. Cracking their own 1:38.00 from prelims, Honng,\u00a0<strong>Erin De Anda<\/strong>, Le, and Grant posted a 1:37.55 for the victory.<\/p>\n<p>Rio Mesa freshman\u00a0<strong>Teagan Monroe\u00a0<\/strong>popped a 55.07 to claim 100 butterfly gold. She returned to claim the 100 bacsktroke with a 55.75. Sierra Canyon&#8217;s <strong>Deanna Umbay\u00a0<\/strong>was runner up in 56.02.\u00a0Her teammate\u00a0<strong>Marissa Johnson <\/strong>was dominant in the 500 freestyle, touching in 5:04.24.<\/p>\n<p>The boys 200 medley relay crown went to\u00a0<strong>Vincent Finello<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mick Leonard<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jake Jepson<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Thomas Finello\u00a0<\/strong>in 1:35.48.<\/p>\n<p>Nipomo&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wyatt Marsalek\u00a0<\/strong>touched in 1:41.91 to win the 200 freestyle. Crossroads senior\u00a0<strong>Luke Young\u00a0<\/strong>(1:42.74) was just behind him. Marsalek was also a double winner with a 4:32.38 in the 500 freestyle. Claiming silver was Nipomo freshman\u00a0<strong>Blake Simpson\u00a0<\/strong>(4:34.61).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Javier Bernal\u00a0<\/strong>of JW North led the way in the 200 IM with a 1:50.17. Six seconds ahead of third was\u00a0<strong>Nick Ding\u00a0<\/strong>of Yoba Linda with a 1:51.62. Ding went on to win the 100 butterfly, soaring under the 50 second marker in 49.32.<\/p>\n<p>The boys from Temescal Canyson got out to an early lead and held on to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:27.46. That team was\u00a0<strong>Jared Chavez<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Cooper Smith<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chase Halsey<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Angelo Melendez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Senior\u00a0<strong>Calvin Giang\u00a0<\/strong>of Gabrielino won the men&#8217;s 100 backstroke in 50.47. Fellow senior\u00a0<strong>JP Mortenson\u00a0<\/strong>of Windward was second in 51.64. Cerritos senior\u00a0<strong>Valdoria Maya\u00a0<\/strong>knocked nearly two seconds off her prelims time to win the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.45. Honng touched second with a 1:05.17.<\/p>\n<p>Three men cleared a minute in the 100 breaststroke.\u00a0<strong>Sean Ward\u00a0<\/strong>of La Serna posted a 56.14 for gold. Just a half second back was\u00a0<strong>Jacob Christensen\u00a0<\/strong>(56.71) of Valencia-Placent. Temescal Canyon&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Angelo Melendez\u00a0<\/strong>(59.44) completed the podium.<\/p>\n<p>On the women&#8217;s side, diving into the final relay Poly-Pasadena and Walnut were tied at 243 points apiece. Walnut was seeded nearly five seconds ahead.<\/p>\n<p>The team of Honng,\u00a0<strong>Katelyn Young<\/strong>, Le and Grant sealed the deal for Walnut, dominating the 400 freestyle relay in 3:33.25. Marlborough&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Julie Hartman<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kay Katada<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lindsay Pantell<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Jordan Phillips\u00a0<\/strong>were second (3:36.45). Poly-Pasadena finished third with\u00a0<strong>Grace Carey<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kaitlin Min<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kate Fogassa<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Sushannah Laste\u00a0<\/strong>(3:37.67).<\/p>\n<p>The Walnut women claimed the Southern Section title with 287 points. Poly-Pasadena was runner up with 278 points and Marlborough secured third with 217.<\/p>\n<p>After the 100 breaststroke it was still a three way race on the men&#8217;s side. Canyon-Anaheim entered the event with 149 points to Nipomo&#8217;s 144 and Viewpoint&#8217;s 140.<\/p>\n<p>Chavez, Smith, Halsey, and Melendez won their second relay of the night for Temescal Canyon in 3:12.92. Flintridge Prep&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andy Langen<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Brett Bell<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Nate Morrissey<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Winson Chen\u00a0<\/strong>(3:13.69) secured silver. With a team title on the line, Canyon-Anaheim was just .04 behind (3:13.73) with the team of\u00a0<strong>Justin Hussong<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sheldon Maag<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jake Lappin<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Garrett Thurmond<\/strong>. Walnut was fourth and Nipomo was fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Canyon-Anaheim totaled 185 points to win the men&#8217;s title.
