﻿{"id":255122,"date":"2017-05-08T11:30:53","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T18:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=255122"},"modified":"2017-05-08T10:14:54","modified_gmt":"2017-05-08T17:14:54","slug":"pacific-wagner-wwp-win-first-ever-ncaa-tournament-matches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pacific-wagner-wwp-win-first-ever-ncaa-tournament-matches\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacific, Wagner WWP Win First-Ever NCAA Tournament Matches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Michael Randazzo, Swimming World Contributor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A couple of first time entrants are looking to make a splash at this year&#8217;s NCAAs.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday both the Pacific and Wagner women&#8217;s water polo teams won NCAA play-in games\u00a0for the first time to advance to Friday&#8217;s first round of play in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/sports\/waterpolo-women\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>2017 NCAA Women&#8217;s Women&#8217;s Water Polo Tournament<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The #8 Tigers were an 11-5 winner over <strong>#25 Pomona-Pitzer<\/strong> at Pacific&#8217;s Chris Kjeldsen Pool. The win earned them a date with #2 seed <strong>Stanford<\/strong> at 3:30 p.m. on May 12 at Indianapolis\u2019 Indiana Natatorium.<\/p>\n<p>After failing the previous three years to win an\u00a0NCAA play-in game, #17 Wagner beat <strong>#15 UC San Diego<\/strong> 6-5 at Canyonview Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n<p>Next up for Wagner is a match Friday against #1 seed UCLA at 12 p.m. The Bruins boast Olympians <strong>Rachel Fattal<\/strong> and <strong>Maddie Musselman<\/strong> and captured the MPSF Women\u2019s Water Polo title and top seeding in NCAAs by virtue of a dominating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalwaterpolo.com\/2017\/05\/02\/ucla-shuts-down-stanford-in-mpsf-wwp-final\/\" target=\"_blank\">6-3 victory<\/a> over the Cardinal and its Olympic duo of <strong>Maggie Steffens<\/strong> and <strong>Makenzie Fischer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth seed <strong>UC Irvine<\/strong> will battle <strong>Cal<\/strong> at 1:45 p.m. while third seed <strong>USC <\/strong>will face <strong>#7 Michigan<\/strong> at 5:15 p.m on Friday. Photo Courtesy: Wagner Athletics<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As she has all year, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Co-Offensive Player of the Year <strong>Kimberly Watson<\/strong> was a difference maker for Wagner\u00a0 The senior from Quebec netted what turned out to be the winning goal when she beat UC San Diego freshman goalie <strong>Reilly Gallagher<\/strong> with a minute remaining in the third period.<\/p>\n<p>Up 6-4 in the fourth, the Seahawk defense allowed a lone goal to UC San Diego sophomore <strong>Krista Schneider<\/strong> with 2:21 left in the fourth but was able to hold off the host Tritons and capture only the second NCAA playoff win in the history of Wagner Athletics.<\/p>\n<p>Watson contributed a team-high four steals while also winning three sprints. Junior<strong> Elise Begg<\/strong> and sophomore <strong>Erica Hardy<\/strong> netted two goals apiece for Wagner, while freshman <strong>Franciska Milo-Sidlo<\/strong> chipped in a lone goal.<\/p>\n<p>Wagner\u2019s <strong>Emily Riddle<\/strong>, the 2017 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, stopped seven shots while Gallagher turned aside six Seahawk trys.<\/p>\n<p>Senior <strong>Lauren Boyer<\/strong>, senior <strong>Lani Tittle<\/strong>, junior <strong>Kayla Fedler<\/strong> and sophomore <strong>Chanel Schilling<\/strong> all joined Schneider on the UC San Diego score sheet with single goals.<\/p>\n<p>NCAA semi-final play will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The 2017 NCAA Championship Match will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Randazzo, Swimming World Contributor A couple of first time entrants are looking to make a splash at this year&#8217;s NCAAs.
