Grothe swam with Auboeck for much of the race but could not hang tight down the stretch, and he ended up taking second in 8:01.94.<\/p>\n<p>Third went to\u00a0<strong>Clark Smith<\/strong>, who recently wrapped up his Texas career with a pair of individual NCAA titles and American records. Smith finished in 8:02.34.<\/p>\n<p>Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marcelo Acosta\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in 8:06.73, and Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Paul Zellman<\/strong> came in next at 8:09.09.
