MANSFIELD, Texas, October 29. TCU’s men’s swimming and diving team opened competition Friday at The Southwest Collegiate Plunge inside the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.<\/p>\n
The Southwest Collegiate Plunge is a five-team meet with Missouri, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M and TCU. Texas is the defending NCAA champion, while A&M finished 12th last year at the NCAA Championships.<\/p>\n
The Horned Frogs grabbed three second-place finishes in the highly-competitive meet, highlighted by the 400-medley relay’s 3:20.77 to open the meet.<\/p>\n
TCU’s Laszlo Gyurko, Edgar Crespo, Edgar Peyro and Devin Price grabbed 42 team points in the meet’s first event, finishing behind only Texas. <\/p>\n
Senior Jeff Gettel earned 21 team points for the Frogs when he touched the wall in second place in the A-final of the 200-backstroke. The Plano, Texas, native clocked a time of 1:51.42 to finish just behind UT’s Austin Surhoff, who was an NCAA individual champion a year ago.<\/p>\n
Crespo, TCU’s breaststroke specialist, finished second in the A-final of the 100-breaststroke. The school record holder in the event touched the wall in 55.86 to finish behind only Nick D’Innocenzo of Texas. The Longhorn breaststoker was a consolation finalist in last year’s USA Swimming National Championships.<\/p>\n
Senior Andy Garcia-Montes continued his fast start to the season in the 200-individual medley. He finished third in the A-final with a time of 1:53.61. <\/p>\n
Freshman Michael Franz placed fourth in the 500-freestyle with a time of 4:34.27. The Carmichael, Calif., native has had an impressive start to his TCU career after picking up a win and a spot on TCU’s 1000-freestyle top-five performance list last Friday in his debut.<\/p>\n
The event concludes Saturday when the teams return to action at 12 p.m. at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.<\/p>\n
