COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, October 29. THE Maryland swimming and diving team ran into a tough North Carolina squad Friday, dropping its home opener to the Tar Heels.<\/p>\n
The women slipped, 165-127, but saw several solid performances from its upperclassmen. Ginny Glover won the 200 back (1:59.43) and took second in the 200 free (1:50.82). The junior combined with Alexa Hamilton, Annie Fittin and Megan Lafferty to win the 200 medley relay (1:43.07). The group of Glover, Lafferty, Fittin and Blair Cross touched the wall first in the 200 free relay (1:33.17).<\/p>\n
Individually, Fittin placed second in the 50 free (23.02) and 100 free (50.33). Addison Koelle (2:03.83), Lafferty (51.32), Katie Hughes (2:05.56) and Hamilton (2:18.80) took third in the 200 fly, 100 free, 200 back and 200 breast, respectively. Koelle was also third in the 100 fly (56.23).<\/p>\n
On the men's side, the Terps fell to No. 13 North Carolina, 165-121. Mitch Challacombe took second in the 100 back (51.81) and Matt Gruszecki finished second in the 50 free (21.63). Andrew Relihan also chipped in with a second-place showing in the 200 back (1:51.87). Senior Roger Dent was third in the 200 fly (1:52.41).<\/p>\n
The Terps fared well on the board as well. Jessica Whelan finished second in the 1-meter (244.04) and Kara Koszowski (255.22) took second in the 3-meter. For the men, Eric Sachs led the way with a third-place showing in the 1-meter (282.45).<\/p>\n
"I think with both our men's and our women's teams today, there were spots where we had some of those championship efforts that we're always looking for," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "I think that's setting us up nicely for finishing up our fall at the Terp Cup and also for ACCs in February.<\/p>\n
"For the end of October with where we are with our training we've progressed well in every meet that we've had."<\/p>\n
