Quincy University, an NCAA Division II school, announced on May 1st that women’s swimming will no longer be offered as one of its intercollegiate athletic programs. The cancellation of the sports team goes into effect immediately.<\/p>\n

Marty Bell<\/strong>, Quincy’s vice president for intecollegiate athletics, explained,<\/p>\n

The decision to make a cut among our athletic offerings is made only after extensive consideration and discussion. With the current financial constraints of the institution, we felt that it was in the best interest of the athletic department and Quincy University as a whole to move forward in this manner.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The 2016-17 season marked the programs second season of intercollegiate competition. Head coach\u00a0Rachel Schlatter<\/strong> recently left the program, accepting a job with Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics.<\/p>\n

Two student athletes were slated to return for the upcoming 2017-18 season and will be given permission to contact other schools if they are interested in transferring, but will honor their scholarships if they choose to stay.<\/p>\n

Bell continued by stating, “we will work on behalf of our student-athletes who are impacted with the necessary support they need to continue in their academic and athletic careers.”<\/p>\n

The program cut sits as a result of significant\u00a0financial problems<\/a> that were revealed in October 2016, where an estimated $5 million budgetary shortfall was discovered. Dot Foods, a food industry redistributor whose headquarters is based out of central Illinois, announced in March 2017 that they would be contributing $1.3 million<\/a> to the University in effort to aid in their financial recovery.<\/p>\n
