ROCHESTER, Michigan, October 23. THE University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team opened the 2010-11 campaign with a decisive sweep of Oakland (185-105) and Notre Dame (172-120) in double-dual action on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 23) inside the OU Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n
The Wolverines claimed both relays and put nine different swimmers at the top of the podium. Sophomore Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan\/St. Mary's International) led the field in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles and swam the last leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Kasey Allen (Louisville, Ky.\/duPont Manual) turned in a pair of runner-up performances on the springboard, including a career-best 321.00 off the one-meter.<\/p>\n
Three of Michigan's rookie swimmers posted wins in their collegiate debut. Freshman Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind.\/Chesterton) touched the wall more than a second-and-a-half ahead of the field in the 200-yard individual medley, accounting for U-M's largest margin of victory on the day. Freshman Sean Ryan (Hixson, Texas\/McCallie School) held off sophomore Ryan Feeley (Rye, N.Y.\/Rye) in the 1,000-yard freestyle, with both Wolverines finishing more than five seconds ahead of the field. Freshman John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz.\/Phoenix Brophy Prep) was the final Wolverine newcomer to earn a victory, clinching his first 100-yard butterfly crown.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, junior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn.\/Towson) posted a win in the 200-yard backstroke and was on both winning relay squads, with his 200-yard medley relay mate, senior James Ridgeway (Chicago, Ill.\/Saint Patrick), also collecting a win of his own in the 100-yard breaststroke.<\/p>\n
After a week off, the Wolverines will venture to Bloomington, Ind., to face Indiana and Texas in non-conference action on Friday, Nov. 5.<\/p>\n
