LEXINGTON, Virginia, October 22. THE Washington and Lee women's and men's swimming teams opened up its 2010-11 season with a split against Mary Washington on Friday evening at Cy Twombly Pool. The men were triumphant over the Eagles with a score of 141-121, while the women fell, 149.5-112.5.<\/p>\n
The Generals (0-1 women, 1-0 men) claimed 10 event victories (eight individual, two relay) to highlight the evening. On the men's side, five different Generals claimed first-place finishes, in addition to two relays. Leading the way was junior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J.\/Montgomery) and sophomore Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass.\/Wellesley), with both swimmers claiming an individual event while taking part in two winning relays. Brian Stirling touched in with a time of 49.25 in the 100 free, while helping the 200 medley relay squad finish in a time of 1:38.30 and the 200 free relay squad record a time of 1:27.98. Sykes swam the 50 free in a top-finishing time of 21.75, and joined Brian Stirling on the 200 medley relay with sophomore Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del.\/Salesianum School) and first-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio\/Oakwood). The winning 200 free relay was composed of Brian Stirling, Sykes and first-years Brendan McGoldrick (Erdenheim, Pa.\/La Salle College) and Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va.\/Cape Henry Collegiate).<\/p>\n
Other top individual finishers for the men included junior Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va.\/Grafton) in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.46, junior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C.\/Greenville) in the 200 back (1:57.99) and Ireland in the 200 breast (2:15.91).<\/p>\n
On the women's side, first-year Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md.\/Saint Paul's) paced the Generals with two first-place finishes. Kasoff claimed event victories in the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.71, while taking the 200 IM in a time of 2:16.15. The other event winner for W&L was junior Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J.\/Mount Saint Mary Academy), taking the top spot in the 100 fly in 1:03.14.<\/p>\n
The women return to action tomorrow as they host the ODAC Relays, while the men return to action next Friday as they travel to Transylvania.<\/p>\n
