MONTCLAIR, New Jersey, October 16. THE Stevens Institute of Technology women's swimming team started 2010 in strong manner, defeating in-state rival Montclair State University, 146-112, on Saturday afternoon in Montclair, N.J. The Ducks took the top spot in eight events on the afternoon and were able to swim the final race as an exhibition as they are now 1-0 on the young season.<\/p>\n
Senior Gabrielle Czernik, sophomore Marissa Douglas, freshman Louise Moores, and senior Laura Barito opened the dual up with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, recording a time of 1:52.90. In the second event of the afternoon, Kim McCaffrey, sophomore Victoria Baldwin, and senior Danielle Sack placed first through third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with times of 11:14.69, 11:26.29, and 11:34.90, respectively.<\/p>\n
Junior Hayley Hatfield and sophomore Allison Henning placed one and three in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 2:02.88 and 2:06.45, while junior Andrea Sturniolo and sophomore Erica Iosue were second and third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.42, 1:06.76). In the 100-yard breaststroke, Czernik and Douglas were second and third as well, touching at 1:12.43 and 1:12.62.<\/p>\n
Junior Sian Pearson and senior Amanda Nauman were one-two in the 200-yard butterfly with Pearson turning in a 2:12.26 and Nauman carding a 2:21.75. Barito won the 50-free with a time of 24.77 and Henning was third in the same event (26.68). Hatfield placed first in the 100-free, recording a time of 56.09, while Fitz notched a 57.24 in taking third.<\/p>\n
Freshman Bridget Sherer earned a second-place finish (2:19.22) in the 200-yard backstroke, and Sturniolo came in third with a time of 2:24.69. Rookie Anne Fodor took third place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:43.24, and Nauman took the top-spot in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 5:29.02.<\/p>\n
Moores, Czernik, and Barito swept the 100-fly (58.96, 1:00.82, 1:01.73), and Fitz placed second in the 200-yard individual medley.<\/p>\n
Stevens swam the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, as exhibition but the team of Moores, Pearson, Henning, and Hatfield recorded a would-be winning-time of 3:58.41 \u2013 more than 16 seconds better than second place.<\/p>\n
Stevens will return to action on October 22 and 23 at the New York University Fall Invitational.<\/p>\n
