MOSCOW, Idaho, October 8. IN the inaugural meet of the 2010-11 season, senior leaders Rugile Mileisyte and Talor Whitaker each won two individual events to lead the Washington State swim team to victory over Idaho and Seattle, Friday. The Cougars took down the Vandals by a score of 125-80, and defeated the Redhawks 157-47. While the Cougar wins are official, the point totals will not be official until Saturday.<\/p>\n
Mileisyte won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle while Whitaker reigned supreme in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Jennifer Dean joined her fellow co-captains by winning the 500 free and finished second behind Whitaker in the 200 freestyle.<\/p>\n
"They did a great job of leading today," said head coach Erica Quam. "Not only in the water but in leading the team as captains."<\/p>\n
The trio of seniors were not the only Cougar swimmers to win events Friday. Junior Jessie Craig touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke and sophomore Shelbi Luchini finished first in the 400 individual medley. The squad ended the meet on a high note as the team of Whitaker, Emily Fenster, Emma Neely and Dean combined to win the 800 freestyle relay.<\/p>\n
WSU showed it has what it takes to win events, but the team also displayed its depth. Neely and Evelina Bieleckaite had second-place finishes in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle, respectively. Danielle Palumbo notched third-place points in the 400 individual medley while Melissa Bogert did the same in the 100 butterfly. <\/p>\n
"It was a good start for the group," Quam said. "In a lot of ways people came out with good, solid times to start the season."
\nThe Cougars will face both Seattle and Idaho tomorrow in a relay meet at Gibb Pool. Some WSU alumnae will also return to Pullman take part in the Homecoming Weekend competition. Events are slated to begin at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n
