DELHI, India, October 7. THE fifth preliminary session at the 2010 Commonwealth Games saw one meet record trade hands between two swimmers and a 12-year-old mark approached.<\/p>\n
Men's 50 freestyle<\/b>
\nOne day after winning the 100 freestyle with the fastest time in the world, Canada's Brent Hayden led qualifiers in the splash-and-dash with a 22.25. The rest of the top eight was comprised of South Africa's Gideon Louw (22.32), Cameron Prosser (22.38), Australia's Ashley Callus (22.46), defending champion Roland Schoeman of South Africa (22.54), Australia's Eamon Sullivan (22.65), and England's Simon Burnett (22.68) and Adam Brown (22.79).<\/p>\n
Also making the cut for the semifinal were Kenya's David Dunford (22.81), South Africa's Graeme Moore (23.02), Grant Turner of England (23.03), India's Virdhawal Khade (23.05), Canda's Richard Hortness (23.20), Papua New Guinea's Ryan Pini (23.23), Cayman Islands' Brett Fraser (23.34) and Bermuda's Roy-Allan Burch (23.35).<\/p>\n
Women's 200 backstroke<\/b>
\nThe meet record of 2:10.36, set by Australia's Joanne Fargus in 2006, fell twice in the preliminaries. Australia's Meagan Nay started things off with a record swim of 2:09.53 in the first heat. Two heats later, Melissa Ingram of New Zealand dipped under the new mark with a 2:09.43.<\/p>\n
Rounding out the top eight for the final are Australia's Emily Seebohm (2:10.01), England's Elizabeth Simmonds (2:10.07), England's Stephanie Proud (2:11.02), Australia's Belinda Hocking (2:11.79), Canada's Genevieve Cantin (2:12.87) and England's Gemma Spofforth (2:12.93).<\/p>\n
Men's 1500 freestyle<\/b>
\nSouth Africa's Mark Randall earned the top qualifying spot for the final with a prelim time of 15:22.80. Daniel Fogg of England (15:28.80), Canada's Ryan Cochrane (15:33.60), South Africa's Heerden Herman (15:35.44), Australia's Ryan Napoleon (15:37.45), Wales' David Davies (15:38.89), England's Richard Charlesworth (15:48.01) and Canada's Sean Penhale (15:56.68) will also swim in tomorrow's final.<\/p>\n
Women's 400 freestyle<\/b>
\nLauren Boyle of New Zealand will take lane four for the final with a top time of 4:10.31. Canada's Alexandra Komarnycky (4:10.48), England's Rebecca Adlington (4:10.70), Australia's Kylie Palmer (4:11.48), Wales' Jazmin Carlin (4:12.11), England's Joanne Jackson (4:12.32), South Africa's Wendy Trott (4:13.15) and England's Anne Bochmann (4:13.74) completed the field for the final.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 IM<\/b>
\nJames Goddard of England, a bronze medalist in this event in the 2002 Commonwealth Games and this year's 200 back champion, qualified first with a 2:00.43. His time fell just short of the meet record set by Australia's Matthew Dunn in 1998 with a 2:00.26. Leith Brodie of Australia (2:01.41), South Africa's Darian Townsend (2:01.72), England's Joseph Roebuck (2:01.80), South Africa's Sebastien Rousseau (2:02.33) and Chad Le Clos (2:02.90), Canada's Tobias Oriwol (2:02.97) and Australia's Thomas Fraser-Holmes (2:03.32) will also step up for the final.<\/p>\n
