WATERLOO, Ontario, October 3. THE Varsity Blues men's and women's swimming teams traveled to Waterloo, Ont., on Sunday, October 3 for a tri-meet with the Guelph Gryphons and Waterloo Warriors. <\/p>\n
Toronto dominated the meet as the men defeated Guelph 74-16 and Waterloo 75-15. The women were just as impressive with a 58-31 win over Guelph and also defeated Waterloo 66-24.<\/p>\n
"For the first meet of the year, it was a great chance to see how our rookies would perform," said assistant coach Linda Kiefer. "It was also good to see what kind of shape the veterans are in. It was great to see the range of the team with this many medalists."<\/p>\n
Individually, 23 Varsity Blues reached the podium in their first meet of the season. Leading the way was rookie Frank Despond of Hamilton, Ont., with three medal finishes, winning the 400-yard freestyle, placing second in the 50-yard butterfly and earning the bronze medal in the 100-yard freestyle. <\/p>\n
Fellow first-year swimmer Vanessa Treasure of Mississauga, Ont., won both the 50- and 200-yard breast stroke events for a double-gold performance.<\/p>\n
Other double gold performances came from team captain Zack Chetrat (200-yard backstroke, 200-yard IM), Stevan Kalaba (50- and 200-yard breastroke) and Poppy Ruksys (200-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM). <\/p>\n
The Varsity Blues return to the water on Friday, October 22 when they host the downtown sprint meet at Varsity Pool. <\/p>\n
