Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>posted a strong second morning at the arena Pro Swim Series meet in Mesa, Ariz., qualifying first for finals in both the 200 free and 400 IM. But she figures to have some strong competition in the evening finals, and also competing in championship heats will be\u00a0Nathan Adrian<\/strong>,\u00a0Simone Manuel<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n

Stanford’s\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>pulled away from teammate\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>in the final heat of the women’s 200 free and earn the top qualifying mark for the evening final. Ledecky touched in 1:57.63, putting her 13th in the world rankings for 2017. She qualified almost a full second ahead of Virginia’s\u00a0Leah Smith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Smith came in second at 1:58.57, and the third seed went to Manuel in 1:59.44. St. Petersburg’s\u00a0Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>also got under 2:00, finishing in 1:59.66.<\/p>\n

Louisville’s\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>was fifth in 2:00.41, and she was followed by another Stanford swimmer,\u00a0Katie Drabot\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.53). Also making the A-final were USC’s\u00a0Louise Hansson<\/strong> (2:00.76) and Texas’\u00a0Madisyn Cox\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.82).<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n

A pair of Trojans were the only two swimmers to get under the 1:50-barrier in the 200 free.\u00a0Dylan Carter\u00a0<\/strong>qualified first in 1:48.99, and\u00a0Cristian Quintero\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 1:49.73. Louisville’s\u00a0Marcelo Acosta\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.36) and\u00a0Joao De Lucca\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.61) took third and fifth, respectively, while Dynamo’s\u00a0Matias Koski\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth in 1:50.58.<\/p>\n

Also getting into the final were Cal teammates\u00a0Long Gutierrez<\/strong> (1:50.68) and\u00a0Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>(1:50.97), and\u00a0Michael Weiss\u00a0<\/strong>was eighth in 1:51.01.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Back<\/h3>\n

17-year old\u00a0Eva Merrell\u00a0<\/strong>finished with the top seed coming out of prelims of the women’s 200 back, posting a time of 2:13.55.\u00a0Merrell, representing Aquazot, led a trio of teenagers in the top three as she was followed by Stanford’s\u00a0Erin Voss\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.29) and Texas’\u00a0Claire Adams\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.39).<\/p>\n

IA’s\u00a0Alice Treuth\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in 2:14.54, ahead of Tide’s\u00a0Callie Dickinson\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.45), Vietnam’s\u00a0Vien Nguyen\u00a0<\/strong>(2:16.86),\u00a0New Zealand’s\u00a0Annabelle Paterson\u00a0<\/strong>(2:17.04) and Houston’s\u00a0Eleanna Koutsouveli\u00a0<\/strong>(2:17.62).<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Back<\/h3>\n

Cal’s\u00a0Jacob Pebley<\/strong>, currently ranked No. 4 in the world at 1:55.56 from the last stop of the arena Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis, cruised into the final as the top seed with his time of 1:58.98. He was well ahead of Academy Bullets’\u00a0Sean Lehane\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.57) and New York Athletic Club’s\u00a0Arkady Vyatchanin<\/strong> (2:00.59), who finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n

Auburn’s\u00a0Peter Fredricksson<\/strong> took fourth in 2:00.72, and FAST’s\u00a0Omar Pinzon<\/strong> was well back in fifth in 2:04.37. Also making the final were\u00a0Zheng Wen Quah\u00a0<\/strong>(2:05.56),\u00a0David Cespedes Echeverry\u00a0<\/strong>(2:06.32) and\u00a0Barkley Perry\u00a0<\/strong>(2:06.70).<\/p>\n

\"1\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Free<\/h3>\n

Stanford’s\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>will go for the sprint double in the 50 free final. After winning the 100 free on day one, she qualified first in the 50 free in 25.34.\u00a0SwimMAC’s\u00a0Madison Kennedy\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 25.46, and Stanford’s\u00a0Lia Neal\u00a0<\/strong>came in third at 25.62.<\/p>\n

New Zealand’s\u00a0Gabrielle Fa’amausili<\/strong> and Cardinal’s\u00a0Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>tied for fourth in 25.69, ahead of Brazil’s\u00a0Etiene Medeiros\u00a0<\/strong>(25.72), Louisville’s\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(25.80) and Canyons’\u00a0Amanda Kendall<\/strong> (25.81).<\/p>\n

Notably, Cal’s\u00a0Dana Vollmer\u00a0<\/strong>finished 55th in 27.59. Vollmer swam the race six months pregnant, and she announced by wearing a green TYR techsuit that her second child will be a boy.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Free<\/h3>\n

Finland’s\u00a0Ari-Pekka Liukkonen\u00a0<\/strong>led the way into the men’s splash-and-dash final in 22.41, well ahead of Race Pace Club’s\u00a0Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>(22.65) and New Zealand’s\u00a0Daniel Hunter\u00a0<\/strong>(22.68).<\/p>\n

Wolfpack Elite’s\u00a0Cullen Jones\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 22.71, and lurking from lane two will be Cal’s\u00a0Nathan Adrian<\/strong>. Adrian won the 100 free on day one and then cruised into the finish in the 50 prelims with a time of 22.78.<\/p>\n

King’s\u00a0Dillon Virva\u00a0<\/strong>(22.88), New York Athletic Club’s\u00a0Josh Schneider\u00a0<\/strong>(22.92) and\u00a0Luke Pechmann<\/strong> (22.96) also made the final.<\/p>\n

Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Anthony Ervin\u00a0<\/strong>just missed the final, tying for ninth with\u00a0Joao De Lucca\u00a0<\/strong>in 22.97.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>was well behind Stanford teamate\u00a0Ella Eastin\u00a0<\/strong>and St. Petersburg’s\u00a0Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>at the 300-meter mark in their heat, but Ledecky stormed back on the free and captured the top seed. She touched in 4:42.33, well ahead of the previous top time of 4:42.92 recorded by Neptune Natation’s\u00a0Mary-Sophie Harvey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Harvey ended up qualifying second in 4:42.92, followed by Margalis (4:43.34) and Eastin\u00a0(4:43.72). Fifth went to Texas’\u00a0Madisyn Cox\u00a0<\/strong>in 4:46.39, and she was followed by Lakeside’s\u00a0Brooke Forde\u00a0<\/strong>(4:48.74), Vietnam’s\u00a0Vien Nguyen\u00a0<\/strong>(4:49.20) and Trojan’s\u00a0Haley Anderson\u00a0<\/strong>(4:50.95).<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Cal’s\u00a0Josh Prenot\u00a0<\/strong>finished as the top seed in the final race of the morning, touching in 4:22.26. Olympic silver medalist\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong>, officially representing North Baltimore, was two tenths back in 4:22.46, and Louisville’s\u00a0Etay Gurevich\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 4:22.84.<\/p>\n

Nitro’s\u00a0Sean Grieshop\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fourth in 4:26.78, followed by Pitchfork’s\u00a0Jarod Arroyo\u00a0<\/strong>(4:28.31),\u00a0Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz<\/strong> (4:32.45), Louisville’s\u00a0Zach Harting<\/strong> (4:33.06) and SMU’s\u00a0Jonathan Gomez<\/strong> (4:33.14).<\/p>\n
