GAINESVILLE, Florida, October 8. THE Gators' men, and women swimming and diving squads combined to win 12 events during the second day of competition at the All-Florida Invitational, including a sweep of the 400 IM events. Both teams remain in first place, above in-state foe Florida State. The women have posted 748 points, while the men have totaled 737.<\/p>\n
The women's team secured six individual, and two relay NCAA "B" cut times in a meet that saw a member of Florida's women's team win each event on the night.<\/p>\n
The winning 200 medley relay quartet of Alana Pazevic (Mill Creek, Wash.), Hilda Luthersdottir (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland), Sarah Bateman (Orlando, Fla.) and Ellese Zalewski (Melbourne, Australia), as well as the 800 freestyle relay team of Kirsten Smith (Cary, N.C.), Natasha Fung (Edmonton, Canada), Kaitlin Frehling (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Elisabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) each finished in NCAA "B" marks, touching the wall in 1:42.63 and 7:20.94, respectively.<\/p>\n
Individually, both Teresa Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.) and freshman Rebecca Rainer (Richmond, Va.) hit NCAA "B" cuts in the 400 IM with their respective first- (4:13.24) and second- (4:19.20) place finishes. Angelina Ballatore (Gainesville, Fla.) followed behind Crippen and Rainer to help the Gators sweep the event.<\/p>\n
Bateman claimed first in the 100 fly (53.76), while Jamie Bohunicky (Gainesville, Fla.) captured the 200 free title. Luthersdottir and Beisel finished atop the pool of competitors in the 100 breast and 100 back, respectively.<\/p>\n
The Gator women swept three other events on the night – the 100 fly, 200 free, 100 back. Crippen and Zalewski finished behind Bateman in the 100 fly, while Beisel and Fung closely followed Bohunicky in the 200 free and Bateman and Crippen secured second and third behind Beisel in the 100 back.<\/p>\n
For the men, a trio of freshmen in Matt Elliott (Peoria, Ill.), Eduardo Soleache (Madrid, Spain) and Dan Wallace (North Berwick, Scotland) swept the 400 IM, finishing in 3:50.96, 3:51.24 and 3:56.70, respectively. The win marked the first of Elliott's collegiate career; both he and Soleache hit NCAA "B" cut marks in the event.<\/p>\n
Marcin Cieslak (Warsaw, Poland) took first in the one hundred free, touching the wall in 48.85. Elliott took home his second victory of the night when he finished first in the 100 breast (55.64).<\/p>\n
Both the men's 200 medley and 800 freestyle teams were victorious. Matt Curby (Oviedo, Fla.), Elliott, Cieslak and Brad deBorde (Longwood, Fla.) pulled together to win the 200 medley relay in 1:31.20, while Curby and deBorde also swam alongside Jason Taylor (Plant City, Fla.) and Carlos Omana (Miami, Fla.) to claim the 800 freestyle relay victory in 6:45.52.<\/p>\n
The All-Florida Invitational will wrap-up tomorrow, on Sunday, October 9, 2011 with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. and finals slated for 4 p.m. Gator fans are encouraged to follow the swimming and diving program via Twitter or Facebook.
