Plenty of NCAA swimmers returned to long course competition for the first time since the summer during the first morning of prelims at the arena Pro Swim Series meet in Mesa. Among those who made their returns were Olympic\u00a0gold medalists\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, both of whom posted impressive preliminary marks during day one.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Free<\/h3>\n

Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>cruised to the top seed in the first event of the meet. Representing Stanford, Manuel recorded a time of 54.02 to move into the world top-15 in her first long course 100 free since winning Olympic gold in the 100 free in Rio.<\/p>\n

Louisville’s Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>edged out Stanford’s\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>for the top spot in their heat, 54.62 to 54.71, and just behind was Trojan’s\u00a0Louisa Hansson<\/strong> in 54.79. Also getting into a strong A-final were\u00a0Cardinal’s\u00a0Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>(54.99), SwimAtlanta’s\u00a0Amanda Weir\u00a0<\/strong>(55.09), Stanford’s\u00a0Lia Neal\u00a0<\/strong>(55.29) and Canyons’\u00a0Amanda Kendall\u00a0<\/strong>(55.76).<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Free<\/h3>\n

Louisville’s\u00a0Joao De Lucca\u00a0<\/strong>posted the top seed in the men’s 100 free with his time of 49.69, and Trojan’s\u00a0Cristian Quintero\u00a0<\/strong>was the only other man to go under 50 seconds, coming in at 49.91.<\/p>\n

Cal’s\u00a0Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>came in just behind Quintero in the final heat, finishing in 50.20. New Zealand’s\u00a0Daniel Hunter\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth in 50.21, followed by Cal’s\u00a0Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>(50.45) and New Zealand’s\u00a0Matthew Stanley\u00a0<\/strong>(50.47).\u00a0Marius Kusch\u00a0<\/strong>and Cal’s\u00a0Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>tied for seventh in 50.59, knocking Trojan’s\u00a0Conor Dwyer\u00a0<\/strong>(50.65) to the B-final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Breast<\/h3>\n

Texas’\u00a0Madisyn Cox<\/strong> paced the field in the women’s 200 breast, finishing with a time of 2:27.02.\u00a0New York Athletic Club’s\u00a0Katie Meili<\/strong>\u00a0came in second at 2:27.95, while\u00a0New York Athletic Club’s\u00a0Breeja Larson<\/strong> (2:28.43) and St. Petersburg’s\u00a0Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>(2:28.75) also got under 2:30 to set up a strong middle of the pool for the final.<\/p>\n

Fast’s\u00a0Zoe Baetel\u00a0<\/strong>came in fifth at 2:31.86, and Louisville’s\u00a0Andrea Cottrell\u00a0<\/strong>took sixth in 2:23.46. Tennessee’s\u00a0Molly Hannis<\/strong>, an Olympic semifinalist in the event, was seventh in 2:32.47, and USC’s\u00a0Riley Scott\u00a0<\/strong>qualified eighth in 2:33.27.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Breast<\/h3>\n

Chase Kalisz<\/strong>\u00a0beat out some fellow U.S. Olympians better known as breaststrokers to take the top spot in the finals. Representing North Baltimore, Kalisz touched in 2:11.98 to edge out\u00a0Kevin Cordes\u00a0<\/strong>in their heat. Cordes qualified second in 2:12.44, while Louisville’s\u00a0Carlos Claverie\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.13) and Cal’s\u00a0Josh Prenot\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.72) will swim in lanes three and six, respectively.<\/p>\n

King’s\u00a0Daniel Roy<\/strong>, who challenged Prenot in their heat, finished fifth in 2:14.94, followed by New Zealand’s\u00a0George Schroder\u00a0<\/strong>(2:16.77),\u00a0AJ Bornstein\u00a0<\/strong>(2:17.33) and Crimson’s\u00a0Calvin Yang\u00a0<\/strong>(2:17.59).<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

Louisville’s\u00a0Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>was the class of the field in prelims, recording a time of 58.42 to claim lane four for the final. Trojan’s\u00a0Louise Hansson\u00a0<\/strong>qualified just behind in 58.54, and\u00a0Amanda Kendall\u00a0<\/strong>was also under 59, finishing third in 58.83.<\/p>\n

Trojan’s\u00a0Kendyl Stewart<\/strong>, who swam the 100 fly at the World Championships in 2015, was fourth in 59.21, followed by Texas’\u00a0Lauren Case\u00a0<\/strong>(59.60), Germany’s\u00a0Aliena Schmidtke\u00a0<\/strong>(59.98), Brazil’s\u00a0Daynara De Paula\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.10) and\u00a0Louisville’s\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.34).<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

Cal’s\u00a0Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>led the way into the final of his best event, finishing in 53.54 to edge out the 53.63 of\u00a0Marius Kusch<\/strong>. SwimMAC’s\u00a0Tim Phillips\u00a0<\/strong>was a close third (53.67), and Auburn’s\u00a0Santiago Grassi\u00a0<\/strong>(53.90) and Trojan’s\u00a0Dylan Carter\u00a0<\/strong>(53.95) also were under 54.<\/p>\n

Rounding out the final were Cal’s\u00a0Long Gutierrez<\/strong> (54.00),\u00a0Louisville’s\u00a0Zach Harting<\/strong> (54.12) and\u00a0City of Plano’s\u00a0Seth Stubblefield\u00a0<\/strong>(54.19).<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

Competing in the 400 free for the first time since winning Olympic gold and setting a new world record,\u00a0Katie Ledecky<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>cruised through prelims and established the top time in the world this year. She came in at 4:01.96, well ahead of Virginia’s\u00a0Leah Smith<\/strong>. Smith qualified second in 4:07.31, improving to tenth in the world.<\/p>\n

Club Wolverine’s Sierra Schmidt\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fourth in 4:12.44, and\u00a0Taylor Ault\u00a0<\/strong>was fifth in 4:13.07. Rounding out the A-final were Texas’\u00a0Madisyn Cox<\/strong>, Vietnam’s\u00a0Vien Nguyen\u00a0<\/strong>(4:15.08) and Neptune Natation’s\u00a0Mary-Sophie Harvey\u00a0<\/strong>(4:15.40).<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

Louisville’s\u00a0Marcelo Acosta\u00a0<\/strong>led the way in the morning’s final event, finishing the 400 free in 3:56.41. He was followed closely by\u00a0Taylor Abbott<\/strong>, who touched in 3:56.65, while\u00a0Marc Hinawi\u00a0<\/strong>(3:57.84) and Nitro’s\u00a0Sean Grieshop<\/strong> (3:58.40) were third and fourth, respectively.<\/p>\n

Pitchfork’s\u00a0Christian Bayo\u00a0<\/strong>(3:58.74), Nitro’s\u00a0Chris Yeager\u00a0<\/strong>(3:59.53), EKC’s\u00a0Liam Bresette\u00a0<\/strong>(4:00.79) and Dynamo’s\u00a0Matias Koski\u00a0<\/strong>(4:00.79) also got into the top heat.<\/p>\n
