{"id":250894,"date":"2017-04-10T10:39:39","date_gmt":"2017-04-10T17:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=250894"},"modified":"2017-04-10T10:39:39","modified_gmt":"2017-04-10T17:39:39","slug":"sun-yang-blasts-342-400-free-at-chinese-national-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sun-yang-blasts-342-400-free-at-chinese-national-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun Yang Blasts 3:42 400 Free at Chinese National Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Sun Yang<\/strong> is again on top of the world rankings in the men&#8217;s 400 free as he posted a 3:42.16 at the Chinese National Championships, according to a report from the Xinhua News Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Sun was the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in both the 400 and 1500 free and won gold in the 200 free in Rio, but he finished a close second behind\u00a0<strong>Mack Horton\u00a0<\/strong>in the 400-meter distance. But his time puts him well ahead of\u00a0<strong>Gabriele Detti<\/strong> (3:43.36) and\u00a0Horton (3:44.18) in the early world rankings for 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Sun admitted to Xinhua after the race that beating Horton&#8217;s time had definitely been a target.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;The timing is satisfying,&#8221; he said.\u00a0&#8220;I keep my eyes open for the ongoing Australian National Championships and I will try my best to outpace these swimmers. All of us are preparing for the World Championships.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Also in China,\u00a0<strong>Yan Zibei\u00a0<\/strong>became the first Chinese man to break 59 in the 100 breast, stopping the clock at 58.92. So far this year, only Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>(58.86) has been quicker.<\/p>\n<p>Yan figures to be a key part of a Chinese 400 medley relay team with a chance at a medal at this summer&#8217;s World Championships. Others on that team could be 100 back Olympic silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Xu Jiayu<\/strong>, 100 fly Olympic finalist\u00a0<strong>Li Zhuhao<\/strong> and 100 free World Champion\u00a0<strong>Ning Zetao<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s 400 free,\u00a0<strong>Li Bingjie\u00a0<\/strong>took the win, but various sources have reported her time differently. Xinhua reports she swam a 4:10.22, while both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimvortex.com\/sun-yang-reminds-detti-horton-of-his-400m-omnipresence-with-342-16-in-qingdao\/\" target=\"_blank\">SwimVortex<\/a>\u00a0reports her time as 4:02.52, which would be the fastest in the world this year.<\/p>\n<p><em>Read more from Xinhua by clicking <a
