On\u00a0one end of the spectrum, you have Emily Seebohm<\/strong>, who just qualified for her sixth World Championship team in the 100 backstroke. On another end of the spectrum, you have Matthew Wilson<\/strong>, who qualified for his first senior national team for Australia in the 200 breaststroke. Both of those swimmers posted times ranked in the top two in the world this year in their respective event on Monday night at the 2017 Australian Swimming Championships in Brisbane.\u00a0Emma McKeon<\/strong> also won her third straight 100 butterfly crown to clinch her second event for Budapest this summer. Australia also saw a decent set of 200 freestyles from the men as they are looking to get back on the podium in the 4×200 free relay on the men’s side this summer. Mack Horton<\/strong>, Kyle Chalmers<\/strong>, Alexander Graham<\/strong> and Jack Cartwright<\/strong> finished in the top four in that event tonight.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Breaststroke<\/h3>\n

Taylor McKeown\u00a0<\/strong>won her second national title in three years in the 100 breaststroke with a win Monday night in Brisbane at 1:07.23. The time is short of the 1:07.11 automatic qualifying time for Budapest. McKeown is better in the 200 breaststroke and if she gets under the qualifying time in that event, she will most likely be selected to be Australia’s breaststroker in the 400 medley relay. McKeown is now fifth in the world in the event.<\/p>\n

Jessica Hansen<\/strong> finished in second at 1:07.33, while Leiston Pickett<\/strong> was third at 1:07.52. Georgia Bohl<\/strong>, Tessa Wallace<\/strong>, Abbey Harkin<\/strong>, Aisling Scott<\/strong> and Sarah Beale<\/strong> also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Butterfly<\/h3>\n
Emma McKeon\u00a0<\/strong>won her third straight national title in the 100 fly with a 57.27 Monday night. That time moves her to second in the world rankings behind Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> (57.12). McKeon was also the only one under the automatic qualifying time (58.05) and has qualified for her third straight World Championships. McKeon also finished second in the 100 free last night, so this is her second event in Budapest.<\/p>\n
Brianna Throssell<\/strong> finished in second, just shy of the automatic qualifying time at 58.83. Throssell is a better 200 butterflyer and will challenge for a Budapest spot in that event later on in the meet. Jemma Schlicht<\/strong>, Gemma Cooney<\/strong>, Emily Washer<\/strong>, Laura Taylor<\/strong>, Christina Licciardi<\/strong> and Sara Saal<\/strong> also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Freestyle<\/h3>\n
In one of the craziest races of the meet, Mack Horton<\/strong> took out the Men’s 200 free with a 1:46.38 for his second national title of the meet. Horton was in eighth place at the 150 and\u00a0released a furious charge over the final 50 to out-touch Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> who finished second at 1:46.87. Chalmers also finished furiously as he was fifth at the 150. Chalmers and Horton were the only swimmers to finish faster than 27 seconds.<\/p>\n
Neither of the top two finished under the automatic qualifying time, but are expected to qualify in other events so they can elect to choose to race the 200 in Budapest. Alexander Graham<\/strong> (1:47.39) and Jack Cartwright<\/strong> (1:47.57) finished third and fourth for relay consideration.<\/p>\n
Horton moves up to second in the world behind Italian Gabriele Detti<\/strong> (1:46.38) while Chalmers moves to fourth behind South Africa’s Chad Le Clos<\/strong> (1:46.84).<\/p>\n
Early leader Cameron McEvoy<\/strong> faded to fifth (1:47.60) and may be considered for a potential relay spot this summer. Clyde Lewis<\/strong>, Daniel Smith<\/strong> and David McKeon<\/strong> also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Breaststroke<\/h3>\n
The first person of the night to qualify for the World Championship team was not who anyone expected, but who a lot of people were hopeful he’d finally pull through. Matthew Wilson<\/strong> swam a personal best time of 2:09.29 to make his first National senior team for Australia in the 200 breaststroke after missing the automatic qualifying time last year to be able to swim in Rio. This is also the first time Australia will have a representative in the event at either the Olympics or World Championships since Brenton Rickard<\/strong>\u00a0finished seventh in 2012. Wilson is now second in the world rankings behind Italy’s Luca Pizzini<\/strong> (2:09.23).<\/p>\n
Zac Stubblety-Cook<\/strong> (2:10.53) and George Harley<\/strong> (2:10.67) gave Wilson a good push throughout the race as the 18-year-olds missed the 2:09.64 qualification time, but give Australia some hope for the future in an event they have been lacking in since Rickard and Christian Sprenger’s<\/strong> retirement.<\/p>\n
Alex Milligan<\/strong>, Joshua Tierney<\/strong>, Liam Hunter<\/strong>, Lennard Bremer<\/strong> and Ewan Bennett<\/strong> also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 Individual Medley<\/h3>\n
Blair Evans\u00a0<\/strong>won her second straight national title in the 400 IM on Monday night at the Australian Swimming Championships, but she missed the automatic qualifying time for the World Championships. Evans won the race at 4:41.46, off the 4:38.20 qualifying standard. Evans lead the race wire to wire and never relinquished her lead. Evans is a veteran on the Australian national team, representing Australia at the 2009 Worlds, so it is unclear if she will still be taken to Budapest this summer.<\/p>\n
 Meg Bailey<\/strong> finished in second at 4:43.67 and Kiah Melverton<\/strong> was third at 4:44.06. Keryn McMaster<\/strong>, Chelsea Gubecka<\/strong>, Calypso Sheridan<\/strong>, Tianni Gilmour<\/strong> and Samantha Wilkins<\/strong> also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Butterfly<\/h3>\n
Brayden McCarthy<\/strong> won his first national title in the 50 butterfly on Monday night in Brisbane with a 23.70 to out-touch David Morgan<\/strong> at 23.82. The 50 stroke events are not World Championship qualifying events, but if McCarthy were to qualify in another event, then he could elect to swim the 50 in Budapest. Morgan’s best chance to qualify for World’s will be in the 200 later on in the meet after he won the 100 last night but failed to reach the qualifying standard.<\/p>\n
Christopher Raven<\/strong>, Cameron Jones<\/strong>, Nicholas Brown<\/strong>, Teodoros Benehoutsos<\/strong>, Dominic Richardson<\/strong> and Edward Marks<\/strong> also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Backstroke<\/h3>\n
Emily Seebohm\u00a0<\/strong>won her tenth 100 backstroke national title on Monday night in Brisbane with a 58.62 for a spot on her sixth World Championship team. Seebohm first represented Australia as a 14-year-old at the 2007 Worlds in Melbourne where she finished fourth. Since, Seebohm has won her seventh straight national title and also broke her own All Comers record that she set in December 2015 at 58.70. Seebohm was also easily under the 59.71 qualifiying time and is currently second in the world rankings behind Canada’s Kylie Masse<\/strong> (58.21).<\/p>\n
Also picking up a spot on the team for Budapest this summer was 29-year-old Holly Barratt<\/strong> who will represent Australia at the\u00a0World Championships for the first time in a David Plummer<\/strong>-esque performance. Barratt was second at 59.66, just under the 59.71 qualifying time. Barratt out-swam promising junior Minna Atherton<\/strong> (1:00.53) Olympian Madison Wilson<\/strong> (1:00.76) who faded to sixth and seventh respectively.<\/p>\n
Hayley Baker<\/strong>, Kaylee McKeown<\/strong>, Sian Whittaker<\/strong> and Amy Forrester<\/strong> also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n
