The 2017 Australian Swimming Championships began Sunday night from Brisbane with World Championship berths on the line. The Aussies are looking to improve on their not so satisfying performance last summer at the Olympics. Olympians Cate Campbell<\/strong>, Bronte Campbell<\/strong>, Cameron McEvoy<\/strong>, \u00a0Mack Horton<\/strong>,\u00a0Mitch Larkin<\/strong> and Emma McKeon<\/strong> were all in action on Sunday night as they fought for spots on the World Championship\u00a0team in Budapest this summer. McEvoy (50 free), Cate Campbell (100 free) and 16-year-old\u00a0Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> (800 free) raced to the top spot on the world rankings list in their respective events as all of them came away with wins except Campbell, who was beat out by her sister Bronte and McKeon in the 100 free final. A total of eleven World Championship spots were clinched on Sunday night in Brisbane as the five day competition is just starting to heat up.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Backstroke<\/h3>\n

Mitch Larkin<\/strong> won the first able bodied final of the night, clinching a trip to Budapest in the process. Larkin led the race throughout and swam a 1:56.66 in the 200 back, good for fourth in the world currently. He sits behind Xu Jiayu<\/strong> (1:55.04), Jacob Pebley<\/strong> (1:55.56) and Matteo Restivo<\/strong> (1:56.55). Larkin won the silver medal at the Olympics last summer. Joining him in Budapest this summer will be Josh Beaver<\/strong> who placed second in the race with a 1:56.95 under the qualifying time of 1:57.12. The time is a bit sluggish for Larkin as his Australian Record from 2015 stands at 1:53.17.<\/p>\n

Larkin will be swimming on third World Championship team and will enter Budapest as the defending champion in the event after he won the title in Kazan in 2015. Beaver will be swimming in his second World Championships after also swimming in 2015.<\/p>\n

Clyde Lewis<\/strong>, Jared Gilliland<\/strong>, Kazim Boskovic<\/strong>,\u00a0Bradley Woodward<\/strong>, Tristan Ludlow<\/strong> and Cameron Tysoe<\/strong> also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Butterfly<\/h3>\n
David Morgan\u00a0<\/strong>repeated in the 100 butterfly, but missed on the automatic qualifying time for Budapest this summer. Morgan won the final on Sunday with a 51.81, missing the 51.51 qualifying time. Grant Irvine<\/strong> was second in the race. Both of those swimmers will also have strong chances of making the World Championship team in the 200 butterfly later on in the meet. Morgan and Irvine also both swam at the Olympics last summer, qualifying for the semi-finals for the 100.<\/p>\n
Despite missing on the automatic qualifying time, Morgan is third in the world behind Chad Le Clos<\/strong> (51.29) and Li Zhuhao<\/strong> (51.34). Brayden McCarthy<\/strong>, Nicholas Brown<\/strong>, Christopher Raven<\/strong>, Bowen Gough<\/strong>, Cameron Jones<\/strong> and Edward Marks<\/strong> also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Freestyle<\/h3>\n
After Cate Campbell’s<\/strong> stellar 52.78 in the heats, many wondered if another 52 low was in the world record holder. But it was not Cate who won the final on Sunday, but it was her sister Bronte Campbell<\/strong> who stole the show with a 52.85 for her first national title in the event. Perhaps more shocking, Emma McKeon<\/strong> finished second, overtaking Cate on the second 50. McKeon was second at 53.12 after placing third behind the Campbell sisters for so many years.<\/p>\n
Cate has already indicated she will not be competing individually in Budapest this summer, but also has not ruled out the potential for a relay swim. Even if Cate elects not to swim in the relay, the Aussies still have a very formidable team with Bronte, McKeon, Shayna Jack<\/strong> (53.40) and Madison Wilson<\/strong> (54.33) to try and defend their world title from 2015, as well as their Olympic title from last summer. Bronte, McKeon and Jack all finished under the A-qualifying time that was 53.92.\u00a0Bronte’s time is now second in the world behind Cate’s heat swim, while McKeon is third.<\/p>\n
Brittany Elmslie<\/strong> (54.38), Emily Seebohm<\/strong> (54.39) and Kotuku Ngawati<\/strong> (54.52) also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Women’s 800 Freestyle<\/h3>\n
The upsets kept on rolling on Sunday night in Brisbane at the 2017 Australian Swimming Championships as big favorite and Australian record holder Jess Ashwood<\/strong> was upset in the 800 free final by 16-year-old Ariarne Titmus<\/strong>. Titmus took an early lead on the defending champion and Olympian and never relinquished it as she won her first national title with an 8:23.08, under the qualifying time for World Championships.<\/p>\n
Ashwood was second at 8:25.61, off her 8:18.14 national record from last year. Ashwood will still make the team for Budapest as she was also under the qualifying time that was an 8:26.96. Titmus is now the number one ranked swimmer in the world in the 800, unseating Simoana Quadarella<\/strong> of Italy (8:25.08). Ashwood is now ranked third in the world behind Titmus and Quadarella. Titmus is also now the fifth fastest Australian of all-time in the event behind Ashwood, Kylie Palmer<\/strong> (8:22.81), Katie Goldman<\/strong> (8:22.83) and Julie McDonald<\/strong> (8:22.93).<\/p>\n
Kiah Melverton<\/strong>, Mikayla Messer<\/strong>, Kareena Lee<\/strong>, Dahlas Rogers<\/strong>, Chelsea Gubecka<\/strong> and Madeleine Gough<\/strong> finished in the top eight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Freestyle<\/h3>\n
Cameron McEvoy<\/strong> raced to the number one time in the world for 2017 in the 50 free as he picked up his third straight World Championship berth. McEvoy swam a 21.55 in the 50 on Sunday night, the fastest time in the world ahead of Great Britain’s Ben Proud<\/strong> (21.74). McEvoy will be joined in Budapest by James Roberts<\/strong> who finished second at 21.91, under the qualifying time. Roberts is now third in the world for 2017.<\/p>\n
McEvoy was a little off his 21.44 from last year’s Australian Championships. He will be looking to have a better World Championships after he was 11th in the 50 at the Olympics last summer. McEvoy now has made his third straight World Championships team. Roberts will also be swimming on his third World Championships team after qualifying in 2011 and 2013. Will Stockwell<\/strong>, Brayden McCarthy<\/strong>, David Morgan<\/strong>, Andrew Abood<\/strong>, Louis Townsend<\/strong> and Alexander Graham<\/strong> also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 Freestyle<\/h3>\n
Defending Olympic champion Mack Horton<\/strong> started off his 2017 campaign with a spot on the World Championship team in Budapest for his third straight national title. Horton won the 400 free on Sunday night with a 3:44.18, out-racing David McKeon<\/strong> at 3:46.90, who will represent the Aussies in Budapest. McKeon out-touched Jack McLoughlin<\/strong> over the last 50 at 3:46.96.<\/p>\n
Horton won the Olympic gold last summer with a 3:41 and will be swimming in his second straight World Championships after falling ill in Kazan two years ago and failing to reach the final in the 400. Horton is now ranked second in the world in 2017 behind Italian Gabriele Detti<\/strong> (3:43.46). McKeon and McLoughlin are now third and fourth in the world. McLoughlin will have a better chance to make the World Championship team in the 800 and 1500 later on.<\/p>\n
Joshua Parrish<\/strong>, Jacob Vincent<\/strong>, Eli Winnington<\/strong>, Ethan Owens<\/strong> and Joshua Hertz<\/strong> also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n

After a couple of key scratches from Georgia Bohl<\/strong>, Jessica Hansen<\/strong>, Aisling Scott<\/strong> and Tessa Wallace<\/strong>, the field was wide open for a new national champion as this race did not serve as qualification for the World Championships. With all of the big names absent, Jenna Strauch<\/strong> took home the title with a 32.11 ahead of Chelsea Hodges<\/strong> (32.51) and Georgia Wells<\/strong> (32.85).<\/p>\n

Kane collected the most power points over anyone in the final for her abilities, despite her time being slower.
