﻿{"id":250466,"date":"2017-04-06T18:01:52","date_gmt":"2017-04-07T01:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=250466"},"modified":"2017-04-06T18:01:52","modified_gmt":"2017-04-07T01:01:52","slug":"sarasota-men-break-800-free-relay-ymca-national-record-on-night-four","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sarasota-men-break-800-free-relay-ymca-national-record-on-night-four\/","title":{"rendered":"Sarasota Men Break 800 Free Relay YMCA National Record on Night Four"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One more YMCA National record fell on the fourth day of the 2017 Short Course YMCA National Championships.<\/p>\n<p>The men from Sarasota ended the night lowering the team&#8217;s own 800 freestyle relay National record.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/junior-national-team-member-austin-katz-lends-verbal-to-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Austin Katz<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong>Matt Nutter<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Brendan Firlie<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Arik Katz\u00a0<\/strong>combined for a 6:34.89, a half second quicker than last year&#8217;s 6:35.21.<\/p>\n<p>Powered by a 1:34.51 split from\u00a0<strong>Grant House<\/strong> Countryside finished second (6:40.29). Also on that relay was\u00a0<strong>Austin Theobald<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Brice Dixon<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Noah Young<\/strong>. Wilton&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Noah Mascoll Gomes<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jake Kealy<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Robby Giller<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>James Mostofi\u00a0<\/strong>placed third (6:42.20).<\/p>\n<p>York&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/georgia-scores-verbal-commitment-from-courtney-harnish\/\" target=\"_blank\">Courtney Harnish<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>started the night becoming a four time champion in the 500 freestyle. She finished in 4:40.27, just shy of her National record of 4:39.13, set in 2014. Her teammate\u00a0<strong>Leah Braswell\u00a0<\/strong>posted a 4:43.90 for runner up honors.\u00a0<strong>Sarah Grinalds\u00a0<\/strong>of Westport Weston finished third (4:48.53).<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 500 freestyle turned out to be among the races of the night. Red Bank&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Christopher Smith\u00a0<\/strong>went out strong and was under National Record pace through the 300 yard mark. Hickory&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ross Dant\u00a0<\/strong>then\u00a0made his move and ran down Smith. The 16 year old touched first in 4:21.33. Wilton&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Robby Giller\u00a0<\/strong>and Coffman&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hank Siefert\u00a0<\/strong>blasted by Smith in the final 50 yards to place second and third in times of 4:23.37 and 4:23.54, respectively. Smith wound up fourth (4:24.07).<\/p>\n<p>Cheshire&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brooke Perrotta\u00a0<\/strong>went two for two on breaststroke events this week, finishing in 1:00.73 to win tonight&#8217;s 100.\u00a0<strong>Lizzy Colwell\u00a0<\/strong>of New Cannan touched second (1:02.18), just ahead of\u00a0<strong>Rachel Maizes\u00a0<\/strong>of Fanwood Scotch Plains (1:02.39).<\/p>\n<p>While he fell short of his own National Record,\u00a0<strong>Maxwell McHugh\u00a0<\/strong>of Door County became a three time champion in the men&#8217;s 100 breaststroke. The senior stopped the clock in 53.44. Eau Claire Wisconsin&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Paul DeLakis\u00a0<\/strong>out split McHugh in the final 50 yards and finished second in 54.19.\u00a0<strong>Chris Bondarowicz\u00a0<\/strong>of Fanwood Scotch Plains earned bronze (55.58).<\/p>\n<p>In a tight 50 free final it was\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tennessee-picks-up-verbal-commit-from-ynational-champ-bailey-grinter\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bailey Grinter<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>of Edwardsville who got her hand to the wall first (22.75). Lancaster and Fairfield&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Olivia Schmelzer\u00a0<\/strong>was just .03 behind with a 22.78. Schroeder&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jade Knueppel\u00a0<\/strong>finished third (22.90).<\/p>\n<p>Rapid Area&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Henry Schutte\u00a0<\/strong>sprinted to a 20.19 to win the men&#8217;s 50 freestyle ahead of Watertown&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Maclean Crossley\u00a0<\/strong>(20.33) and Boise&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Thomas Roark\u00a0<\/strong>(20.65).<\/p>\n<p>Powered home by Harnish, the York women won the 800 freestyle relay. Braswell led off followed by\u00a0<strong>Marisa Gingerich\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Marget Shelly<\/strong>. The team touched in 7:16.91. Greater Spartanburg&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sydney Baker<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Maegan Rudolph<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Emily Horomanski<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Jessi Snover\u00a0<\/strong>touched second in 7:20.02. Cheshire&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Boyer<\/strong>, Perrotta,\u00a0<strong>Mia Leko<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Alexandra Tyler\u00a0<\/strong>were third (7:22.68).<\/p>\n<p>With one day to go, York leads the women&#8217;s team scores with 243 points, followed by Boise (187), Spartanburg (181) and Cheshire (173).<\/p>\n<p>The Sarasota men have a commanding lead of 360 points, ahead of Wilton (194), Upper Main Line (193) and Birmingham (162).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One more YMCA National record fell on the fourth day of the 2017 Short Course YMCA National Championships.
